Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook

Unexpected Death of a Service Dog & Successor Dog
I bought this book specifically for the chapters on the loss of a service dog, associated grief and preparing for a succesor dog. For that it was very good. The rest is not quite a germane to my situation and talks more about the process of acquiring a service dog from a program or agency. The copy I received was an ex library copy which I don't mind but the glue was old and the pages came out as I turned the pages to read it

Working with a Service Dog
This book is a useful "owner's manual" for handicapped people who have worked with one of the established training and placement agencies to acquire a trained service dog. It is full of information about the training received by the handicapped person at the training facility, on how to use and care for the the new dog, commands the dog may have been trained to obey, and even how to deal with the loss of the companion and helper of possibly many years. This book will not be of as much use to those handicapped persons who are training their own service dogs.

disappointed
I was truly disappointed with this bookThe authors address and dismiss owner-trained dogs in one sentence. With over half the assistance dogs in America owner trained, I think it deserves at the very least a chapter. It would behoove them to include the TEAMWORK books by Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelly as a reference. There are so many people who can use a service dog and so few programs available that any book on the subject ought to include the possibility of independently training such a dog. However this book would be a good gift for anyone with an aging service dog. It handles the loss of a dog with compassion.

not what I expected
I think there is probably nothing wrong with this book. It simply is not what I wanted, needed or expected. I glanced through some paragraphs in several parts of the book, but quickly saw it didn't fulfill my own needs. It seems sweet, but I really wanted a Service Dog GUIDE BOOK. Not a book about the expeperience a service dog one and it's person had together or generalizations. Still, if I had extra money I'd probably keep it. I need every penny for my dog, though…. Hmm, maybe I should call her Penny!

must have for the service dog trainer
This book gets 5 stars on the content. The auther adresses things people just do not want to deal with such as loss, retirenment and the ups and downs of having a service dog. She shows the difference between the family pet and the partner bond of a service dog working with you 24/7. This book is a must have as it has many good resources for someone thinking about getting a service dog, the service dog owner and trainer. It is NOT a training book, it does discuss what a service dog is and what a service dog is not, it is a guide book of information and very well written.

Good for those considering a program service dog for the first time
As a SD user I did not find this book particularly helpful. I think it would have been helpful to read before I got my SD, but after 18 months together we are a solid working team. The part on the death of the SD was the only thing that really meant anything to me, as I am yet to confront this. I found much of it to be brief and not offering anything new to me. It is certainly the best overall book I have read on SD, but it is really only geared to those who are obtaining a dog for the first time from a program.

Good, but not very comprehensive.
It covered some topics, but mostly from an emotional standpoint, and didn't address very many practical concerns. I would love to see a book that addresses some of the practical concerns with getting and maintaining a service dog. Overall, I got something out of this book, but still came away with a lot of questions.

Milo's Mom
This books redeeming quality is in two specific pages that list the commands that service dogs need to know and what the command consists of. The rest of the information was not new to me, but may be to others. It is a good companion book to others that I have purchased.
