Very handy reference
I use this as a handy reference. I find that none of the books covers everything in quite the same manner, so it is helpful to have a variety. I now have three Nikon D800 manuals and refer to them often. When one of the books might not be quite as clear or detailed, the others, because of their different approaches, finally make the subjects understandable.

Easy Read
This is the second book I read by Jeff and I am working on my third. In my opinion Jeff covers what you need to get going fast. Also, I enjoy the fact this book is written more like a story than a technical book and is full of everyday examples and projects you can do. If you seek basic to moderate information in an easy to understand book...this book gets a 10 out of 10 on my scale. On a last note, this book does offer some detailed information on the D800 camera, however, if you seek a technical book that covers all details in depth....this book may not be what you seek.Good job Jeff.

my kind of hardware manual!
If I only want to know how to make a gadget do what I want, the manual that comes with it usually suffices. Now I understand that the manuals that come with today's prosumer DSLRs are only slightly thinner than War and Peace, but they do the job. This book goes one step farther: it shows you WHEN to use the bells and whistles, what you should expect (and NOT expect), and what can go wrong. And at the same time, it reviews the basics of good technique. Well done and highly recommended, especially if you belong to the "I got this camera for my birthday, but it has 47 different menus!!" club.

A complete waste of money and time
My assumption (completely erroneous as it turns out) was that a book written for a D800 or D800E user would be directed toward an advanced amateur/pro audience who wanted to fully exploit and understand the strengths (and weaknesses) of this camera. Instead this is a book that covers Photography 101. Does anyone who buys this camera not understand the difference between a wide-angle lens and a telephoto??? Or how about depth of field??? Essentially the author has packaged what is found in a 1000 other elementary photography books and wrapped it around some specifics pertaining to a Nikon D800. Most of the book is so rudimentary that it's a complete waste of time. For those Nikon D800/E users who really want a decent exploration of the features of this camera, pass on this book and buy J. Dennis Thomas' "Nikon D800 & D800E Digital Field Guide".

significant improvement over Bush and Young in learning basics of the D800 & Photography
Nikon D800: From Snapshots to Great Shots This book explains how to use the D800 to take photographs, with examples of photos and what camera setting were used to capture the image. Its both a how to take a photo or create a photo effects while learning how to utilize the D800 multiple capabilities. Strong recommendation for a beginner or intermediate student of photography. The price make this a super bargain. The end of chapter assignments help you retain the information discussed in each chapter. Suggested practice exercises are instructive with out being excessively time consuming. A great book for me as an beginner/intermediate photographer as I learned about the D800 by using its features to take pictures.

Too much and too little
Too much time spent on how to make a particular photograph and not nearly enough on Nikon's D800 functionality and unique "ins and outs". Those who invest in a camera at the level of the D800 likely know beyond the camera skills delineated here. I suspect a "cut & paste" from the author's other books.

THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL!
I really get on with the style of this Author. Things are well explained, it is not dictaorial with activities to cement learning. It helps to discover things about your camera you didn't know existed even after reading the manual, in addition to which it explains why and when you would need the features covered.I also have the Nikon D3200 version, both are high recommened.Tish
