A patriot and his remarkable regiment...
This short booklet (just over fifty pages) is a reprint of a paper delivered to the Marblehead Historical Society in 1903. It concerns the exploits of General John Glover, who commanded a regiment and then a brigade in General George Washington's Continental Army. Glover's regiment of Marblehead fishermen and sailors were tough fighters ashore, but their most famous exploits may have been rescuing Washington's trapped Army from Long Island, New York, in August 1776, and then rowing that same Army over the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 to attack Trenton. Glover served throughout the war in the Northern theater of operations, including the terrible winters at Valley Forge and Morristown, and the key Battle of Saratoga. The paper presents only an outline of Glover's career in uniform but the narrative makes clear his personal courage and his superb sense of organization, including a commendable ability to work out good battlefield solutions in the absence of guidance from higher officers. It is definitely recommended to those readers with a good working knowledge of the Revolutionary War. The general reader may find it harder to follow. There are no maps or illustrations included with the text.
