My 2nd Breville product purchase
This toaster oven is fantastic. I warmed two slices of bread for a sandwich. This toaster has degrees of toast for your bread. It was warmed perfectly to my liking, not brown, just warm. The bread came out of the refrigerator so it was cold so I used 2nd warming number. I have also used it on a frozen pasta dinner perfectly. It is very easy to use and heats up just the way you like it. There is no guessing. Made well and is easy to use. Just follow the start up instructions and you are good to go. My last toaster oven was good....but it doesn't hold a candle to this one. It also has a warming function for the top of the toaster. It's still new - but I am going to use this toaster oven often. Buy it with confidence.

Good toaster oven
We had the much larger version of this oven and then our young adult child took it off to college. So we downsized to this model, much smaller and less expensive. I love it. I don't have any of the problems I read about it the reviews. My favorite thing about it is that it heats up fast. The cookie setting works well for cookies but you can only bake about 6 cookies at a time. I cut a silicone mat down to size and don't bother with a tray. Everyday my husband makes toast. But I guess I use it more for the other modes like bake, cookies, and reheating. If you are deciding between a bigger and smaller version, I will say that although this definitely looks smaller, you still end up using that whole section of counter. There is barely enough room in front of the oven to open the door and get your toast out, so it isn't like you are going to have a lot of empty space. I don't regret getting the smaller one but the bigger one we had before was able to bake a wider variety of pans and dishes. For this one, I have just a few special baking dishes that will fit.

Just great -- so well designed -- well except for a few unacceptable hot spots...
I've been really reluctant to update my kitchen electronics because I love what I have so much. But age comes with time. I am reviewing here the toaster broiler oven but as background I just want to say: My 25 year old microwave finally gave out and I replaced it with the current version of that model despite the fact that all the reviews suggest that these microwaves give out after a couple of years -- no more couple of decades of use as when they first appeared on the scene. But I was so happy with how the features had improved over the last 25 years -- that just about everything I found irritating about my original microwave had been addressed and many things improved upon that I just been so pleased with having the new one. So my toaster broiler oven is also showing its age. It still works just fine but the paint is chipping, and it has some design flaws. We needed a 2nd one for a 2nd location so I figured it was time to move my current one to the second location and gamble on a new one. My positive experience with the microwave made me much more willing to do so. The Breville does not disappoint, it heats, cooks, broils, toasts everything so much better than my old one. The feature of the bamboo tray on top (purchased separately) is wonderful. Having the oven "pre-heat" to the desired temperature before sticking something in is also wonderful (Though I have not tested whether it does indeed get to the temperature it states. I am just starting to branch out from toast and broiling or simple cooking on the bake feature, like fish -- nothing as sophisticated as bread or pizza yet.) Everything of the limited range I do comes out sooo much better than with my old one. and the subtleties and variations of temperature and style of heating and having a time to set for cooking, etc. is wonderful. But 2 things I find problematic -- the unexpected hot spots -- you can indeed burn yourself is you touch certain parts -- and which parts they are is unexpected -- a corner here, a certain point there. I don't understand -- with all the cleverness and care of the design of features -- how hard could it be to put a little insulating or material that doesn't get so burning hot on the outside? The other issue is that it seems that the oven stays in "standby" mode all the time and you need to unplug it after use. Maybe someone can correct me, but I don't see a clock and the LCD screen stays lit with the temperature of the type of cooking on display 24 hours. That I find annoying but fortunately they have cleverly designed the plug with a hole so it is easy to pull out (see some of the pictures of the item to see what I mean.) Maybe that is safer anyway. SO despite these drawbacks -- even the serious one of somewhat dangerous hot spots -- the features are so wonderful, that I still give it 5 stars. However, if there would be children around or an aging parent, I would not keep it because of the hot spot potential to burn oneself. UPDATE: It's been about 2 months -- and I am even more in love with the Breville now. I appreciate a number of its features that were new to me -- the reheat option (as opposed to bake), the toasting is great. It took a while to get used to how slow everything is -- how long it takes to preheat to the desired temparature, how slowly even broiling takes. But it is worth developing the patience. Everything tastes so much more delicious properly cooked in this slower manner. And I was wrong about the LCD display light not going out; it does eventually. I am not sure how long because I haven't yet noticed when it happens. But I no longer pull out the plug to stop the light.

Very satisfactory little oven and toaster
I have had this little oven since January, so have had lots of time to use it. It's great! It fits nicely on the end of a kitchen counter, keeps its baking temperature very well, has easy access and a surprisingly large baking pan. A large chicken breast, or two small ones, cook evenly and well. Its toasting options are a little hard to figure out at first, but they are very accurate. The same dial controls the number of slices and the length of the cycle. You have to push the dial on the bottom, then turn it to choose the options. I particularly like that it turns itself off, but does not pop open or eject the slices like an old-fashioned toaster. (My husband thinks it takes too long, but it works for me as I am usually fixing another part of breakfast at the same time.) It is a little expensive, but dependable quality is! I would give it a fifth star if it was just an inch higher, so it would bake something as large as a small turkey breast half.

My wife really likes this Breville Compact Smart Oven.
UPDATE : Nearly two years old and used every single day and we are just as pleased as the day it first arrived. There are some reviews which claim it wouldn't last 6 months or a year, well the Breville unit we received is rapidly approaching its second birthday. Actually, with this unit, we use our regular oven less and less. I like the way this unit cooks but I really like the way it reheats food. Where a Microwave will warm food much faster, it also tends to make some meats "rubbery". Not the Breville toaster oven, it warms the food through uniformly and doesn't "change it" the microwaves can. This oven is also very good for crisping things like french fries, breads, etc. Whether its as simple as heating up my wife's daily raspberry Pop tarts or baking cookies or making bread, this oven has done it all. Very good for pizza's as well........ We have cooked a wide range of items in this oven and it's used at least once everyday. Does my two years of use change my rating of this unit? No, I still rate it very highly and we are very happy with this toaster oven. We have even bought others this same toaster oven as a gift and they have indicated they are pleased with it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ordered this as a surprise for my wife. Her last toaster oven recently went to the appliance yard in the sky and she had mentioned that she wanted another toaster oven, but not a cheapie that are sold at the local stores. After research, I found this Breville Compact Smart Oven and ordered it as a surprise for my wife. Imagine her surprise when it arrived, only to be immediately followed by disappointment that there was damage to the shipping box and it transferred to damage to the oven right in the center of the rear and top of the oven. I contacted Amazon immediately and they shipped a replacement which we had in just a few days. I returned the damaged oven the same day i received it. The return process couldn't have been easier. My wife is very pleased with this oven's consistency and it's ease of use. It's also a very good looking appliance. We were in Best Buy recently and they had the same oven at a price $90 higher than what I paid Amazon. Check out the plug on the cord, another indication that Breville is paying attention to how their product is actually used. Impressive. The oven is well made, is an attractive appliance and has the look, feel and function of a quality appliance. We have now used it for about a month and my wife uses it now instead of the big oven for many meals. This is one of those purchases which I looked forward to receiving and am now glad I spent the money. This is heads and shoulders above a Black and Decker or other similar low price point toaster oven. The size is also perfect to be left out on the counter in the corner where my wife wanted it kept. If I could, I would give this 6 stars. Well, in a way, I guess I can ******.....

Bought it. Returned it the next day.
Bought to replace an old Black and Decker toaster oven that finally died after more than a decade of use. I was never really happy with it because it was poor at making toast and took too long to toast everything from plain bread to English Muffins or bagels, etc. Key in decision to buy it was its top rating by Consumer Reports and it's reported ability to toast quickly and evenly. Opened it and -- before doing anything else -- read the operating manual. It said to record the model number and the serial number for future reference. Model number: OK. Serial number? There is no serial number. After calling Breville's toll free number and hanging on interminably -- with no indication as to how long I'd be on line -- I was told that there was a "batch number" embossed on the label that showed the Model Number. So why doesn't the paperwork that comes with the toaster oven say so? I have no idea. There's nothing on Amazon's site, or Consumer Reports site, or anywhere else I looked on line that indicated that the Breville needed 4 inches of clearance on each side, and where I keep my toaster oven I don't have a total of 4 inches of clearance combined on both sides no less 4 inches on each side for a total of 8 inches. The old Black and Decker was 1150 Watts. The Breville is 1800 Watts. It gets so much hotter than the old Black and Decker -- not just inside, but outside: the top, the sides, the front and the back, and the bottom of the over-the-counter cabinet above the toaster oven -- that it became immediately clear why it needed the excessive clearance: fire prevention. I repacked it today and took it to UPS. Within hours Amazon issued the refund even before it had left the UPS Store. Nice customer service! It seems as if it was well made. Frankly, it was surprisingly light in weight, but nicely constructed. Because of the clear fire risk due to the lack of the mandated clearances, I never even toasted a slice of bread in it. I have no opinion as to how well it actually toasts, or bakes, or broils, or cooks pizza, or deals with frozen food because i never did any of those things. I just returned it. If you have the required clearances, and don't intend to place it under an overhanging cabinet, this may be the perfect toaster oven I was hoping for. Just be aware of how much counter space you'll need for it -- much more than its footprint. Today I ordered a Panasonic NGB110P to replace it. From Amazon. It's rated at 1300 Watts, so although it's more Watts than the old Black and Decker's 1150 Watts it should not exude nearly as much heat as the Breville's 1800 Watts. It's not nearly as highly rated as the Breville, but Consumer Reports says it toasts quickly and well -- my primary concern after safety.

Breville where have you been hiding
Had never heard of Breville. Looked at all the usual brands for a toaster oven replacement. The Breville is the best we ever had in 50 years! And it is great looking too. Easy to maintain. We've toasted, baked and broiled. All work very well. The digital screen showing Time Temp Preheat is great. Easy to set Time and Temp or number of slices for toast with the dial. Where has Breville been hiding? We had first bought a Hamilton Beach. That model couldn't even fit our 9" pie pan, something every toaster oven we've ever had could handle. Returned the HB. We liked the oven so much, after having it for some time we bought a Breville All in One Food Processor/immersion blender to replace our 12 year old immersion. Sure the Breville products are higher priced, but sometimes the price actually reflects quality.

This little guy has changed my life - for the better!!
I adore my Breville. I read many reviews before purchasing... but this little guy fits in perfectly and was exactly what I expected (and wanted). Some reviews said that the beeping was too much and/or too loud. Personally, I don't get that at all - the Breville is a countertop oven, and beeps exactly when my full-sized oven would: when preheating is complete, and when the cooking is done. I also find the noise level is just fine - too quiet if anything! I find the controls to be simple and intuitive. Even when you've started cooking, you can still push the timer button to add (or subtract) time if needed. I love that the Breville remembers your last time and temp for each cooking preset. My baking and roasting vary of course, but my morning toast is exactly the same every time - it's so nice that Breville remembers my "prefect" toast setting and just does that, every time I select "toast." The Breville fits perfectly on my counter top in between the fridge and the bread basket. I don't have any trouble with heat at all. I've left a couple inches between the fridge and the oven's side (the one that doesn't have extra air vents)... There's another couple inches I left between the back of the oven and the counter backsplash. On the side with the vents, I've left the most space - maybe 6-10 inches before the side breadbox... No problems at all! And even with all that clearance the oven still doesn't take up counter space. There is a hanging cabinet above this counter - but I have enough clearance that heat on the top side is not a problem. And for people who complained that the Breville heats up at all... this is a compact oven. If you don't want an oven that gets hot on the surface, you don't want an oven. Look at smaller, less oven and more "horizontal toaster" appliances. And if you do want a compact oven - then stop being surprised when the oven heats up. Also, get the Breville. It really is the best one you're going to find. My only complaint is actually with the freebies that come with the Breville... the enamel broiling & baking pans are kinda "meh." I cook with calphalon cookware and bakeware, so I just laughed at the little pans when I saw them. They are nice because they are a perfect fit for the oven's interior space... but upon my first use, the broil pan warped in the heat. (I know, right?) Also, they aren't dishwasher safe... so, basically, just get your own 10x10 pans. I can't really complain too much, however - after all, the little pans are basically freebies. I was really paying for the oven, and the oven exceeds my expectations (and makes perfect toast and pizza).

Thrilled with this purchase!
I have been using this toaster oven daily since I bought it. It can do almost anything: bagels, quiches, bread pudding, banana bread, chicken legs, pies, pizza, I could go on! Funnily enough, the thing it doesn't do perfectly is toast! It's great on top but doesn't toast quite as well on the bottom, but that doesn't bother me a bit. It's so easy to clean with all non-stick surfaces. The controls are all so intuitive that I've never even opened the manual. I use it more than I use my oven and it can do almost anything my oven can do. It's only limited by size, so while it can't cook a big turkey, it can do meals for one and two people with ease. I raved about it so much my sister bought one. It's a winner!

Arrived in 12 hours.
Great toaster oven. This is my third one. Gets a lot of use in my house. Features work well. ie: broiler and toast features. It looks great, not too big, not to small. Does Pizza very well. Heats up to temp. fast.

Great Quality Product
This is our 2nd purchase of this model. The dimensions are perfect for a small home with limited counter top space. Our last one lasted about 8 years with very regular use including roasting small chickens. Ultimately, some of the settings stopped working but even then we used other ones to compensate. Gave 4 stars for ease to clean because stainless steel is never easy to clean really. Great product! Hope they don't discontinue this one. We own several Breville products and they all seem to be of this quality.
