Snow Crystal Shapes
As a biophysical geographer and GLOBE trainer I work with snow. I am always looking for ways for student scientists to do hands-on, minds-on science. Higham provides 64 paper snowflakes. As one very bright 10-year told me, "Snow is dead clouds."Snow crystals are the most unstable substance on earth - always changing while forming, falling and on the ground until the spring melt. These are imaginative, fun, snap shots of snow crystals. Some of Higham's designs are a stretch (Halloween, 4th of July), but anything that helps gain a greater understanding of snow, and gets away from the stereotypical six-point star snow "flake" and more toward the vast diversity of snow crystals is a plus. I use Higham's book with my student scientists at the K-12 and university level. When students work through Higham's designs they are then ready for more complex, multidimensional true snow crystals.

Lots of Fun & Very Easy to Do
We ordered this book a few weeks ago and we have enjoyed making many of these snowflakes. The main idea we found is we needed really sharp, tiny scissors with an extremely pointed edge - and the paper needed to be thin - also we just sketched the patterns onto the paper with a pencil. Not all of our snowflakes came out looking like they should have - but they were all still pretty, so we still hung them, and we just tried again until we got the pattern right. I suppose you could use thicker paper if you had larger paper, but we only had small paper, so we had to use the small scissors. Then we tried using leftover gift wrapping paper that was headed for the trash - and we created some beautiful snowflakes with it. Also - the kids enjoyed stringing some of the "snowflakes" they made on ribbon and taping them from the ceiling - so it appeared to be "snowing" in the house. The "snowflakes" made with thinner paper did not hang as well (they tended to curl up) - so we had to spray them with spray starch and then put them into a heavy book for a few days - to get them to hang straight.

Kindle edition is wonky
I bought this as a resource to use in making my own designs. It will work fine for that, as I can take a basic fold and basic structure and branch off from there. That's why I'm fine with the Kindle edition, and don't need designs to trace. HOWEVER.... the Kindle edition is wonky in that the title shown on each page is for the image on the previous page (for ex, the title on the Love Birds page says Tulip Garden, which is the design from the previous page and the Lovebirds image is titled Flying Kites). It's an error in pagination, but would have been very simple to proof and fix. Note: this is the effect on Kindle for PC - I've not looked at the book on my Kindle, as I don't plan to use it there. The designs are ok - no better or worse than the ones on my Kirigami calender from a few years ago, but are more suited for children than adults. I use this type of design element in doing surface design on fabric.

Delightful book - best used with a copier or scanner
I have a previous version of this book which seems to be the same except for the cover. I love it and use it year round. I've been cutting snowflakes this way freehand for about 30 years but it's so nice to have patterns. You really need manicure scissors for some of the patterns but not all.The best way to use this book is to copy the pages you need, cut out the triangular pattern from the copy, fold up your paper and then tape the pattern to the top using a very small piece of tape. Then cut around the white parts and you are set.

This is a fun "how to" for any season.
BAAAAD employee, finding reasons to cut snowflakes at my desk. And it's on my KINDLE, so easy enough to enjoy the book and quickly close the cover if anyone visits my office! I like that this book gives you basic know how to enjoy cutting your snowflakes, and then inspires you to tweak the patterns for new designs. It was a good price and it's a nice "how to" book. Not so lengthy that you get bogged down in the directions. The brevity keeps it simple and fun!

Fun!
I have had lots of fun with this book and have used it as a springboard for some designs of my own! The idea of fantasy seasonal snowflakes had just not entered my mind. I especially loved the butterfly one! I will say the thinner the paper the better (I found some old Erasable Bond Typing paper worked well), since you are cutting through so may layers. I did do some "clean up" to a few after opening them. Remember the inside layers get smaller!

"ALITTLE DISAPPOINTED"
I was a little disappointed when I downloaded this onto my kindle . I know the book cover says snowflakes for all seasons, but I really thought there would be quite a bit more just simple winter snowflakes. There are some very nice snowflakes in this book, really nice, but honestly, I myself who decorates my home ,including my homes windows for every holiday would not put snowflakes up for Easter, St. Patrick's day , or even the 4th of JULY. My husband who has such an open mind wants me to locate some colored copy paper to cut out some of the other holiday snowflakes .My husband can find good in Lucifer , so I agreed .I just really wished this book had more pages of winter flakes. 📖THANKS FOR READING ,BYE📓
