Wash-In Water Repellent

I had great success with Gear Aid Wash-in Water Repellent. I read the reviews and was somewhat concerned as to whether or not Gear Aid would work. Prior to using this product, I took my coat to the dry cleaners to be professionally cleaned, since I read on the manufacturer's website that a clean garment will work the best. After that, I followed the packaging directions for Machine. I pre-washed my coat without soap or other laundry products, and did not use the recommended Revivex Pro Cleaner (I figured that since the coat has already been cleaned, it did not need cleaning again), but that the pre-wash was important to saturate the coat to allow the Gear Aid to work. I put the coat in the dryer on medium heat for 40 minutes and tested it under running water. Water ran off the coat as advertised

This is a terrific product! I used it on my wool coat and jeans I soaked my wool coat in it, in a basin so not to ruin my coat. But this stuff is pretty close to waterproofing. I live in the Northeast area. It doesn't let snow melt into the fabric. Added bonus it doesn't get dirty as easily. Everything got wiped away. I also used it on my jeans and socks that I use for barn work. It lets socks breathe but doesn't get wet from sweating or snow. Barn jeans were easily wiped clean! I don't know how I lived without it honestly!

I purchased this to treat a few of my rain jackets that had lost their ability to "bead" off water as they used to be able to. I purchased the recommended cleaning product along with it, to make sure I follow the process correctly. I washed the garments first per the instructions and then chose to use the "soak" cycle in my front load washing machine, rather than soaking it in the sink. That ensured the soak is a little longer than instructed, about 20 minutes. The first time around was not successful. I splashed water on the jacket after it dried and the water soaked into the fabric immediately. So, I tried again after reading the instructions a little more careful. You have to make sure of a few things. The water you use has to be warm. DO NOT rinse. Spin only and definitely use the dryer. This will not work if you don't tumble dry the garment. Which makes it a bit complicated as a lot of rain gear can't be tumble dried. I started with a VERY low setting and was able to find a warm setting that activated the chemicals to do what they needed, without damaging the jacket. But it felt a little like a gamble. The second time around the product did what it was supposed to. Now if I splash water on the jacket, it will bead off. I have not tried a real rain but it is definitely better than before. Overall 4 starts because it takes some work to get this right and I am not 100% sure that it will truly protect the garment as well as the original treatment my rain gear had.

I've used all the brands, this is the best water repellent. It works well with some post wash sprays as well. As long as you carefully follow the instructions this brings your clothing back to new. The water beads right off. I used it once a year to keep the water beading and it's never failed. It's basically no scent and lasts about one season with normal use, no residues.

This is a great replacement or add on DWR for most materials. You do need to clean the garment or bag first, with a couple extra rinses and maybe a couple more rinses. Not so much to rinse the garment, but to make sure that there isn't any detergent (especially this) or soap residue in the washer. Any detergent will drastically reduce the effectiveness of any and every DWR or breathable fabric no matter who makes it, where it was made, or what it's on. It has to do with the weakening of surface tension and allowing water to pass through areas it's normally not able to. Anyway, throroughly rinse. Run this through a soak cycle and a higher soil setting (longer agitation), and a single rinse with a low water level if your machine allows that. Ideally you can dry the item(s) on medium as this will make it bond better to the item and it will last longer. Low works but not as well, and if you can't use the dryer at all air drying works, it's just not as long lasting.

I followed the directions to waterproof my jacket (nylon windbreaker type material) it didn’t really work. I filled my washer with the solution in it and turned it off to let it soak. Then I ran the spin cycle and put it in the drier to dry my jacket and supposedly set the waterproofing. It added a little waterproofing to my jacket but if it’s raining hard it doesn’t help at all.

Easy to use

Does not work! At all. I used it on a heavy cotton windjacket. I followed instructions exactly, and used the entire package even though it called for 1 ounce per garment. I applied it 3 times and followed instructions to the t. I lightly dried it- i sprinkled water on it and it just soaked through the fabric. Not even one bead of water. Complete failure. Very disappointed. If you do decide to use this product wear a respirator as the VOCs are off the chart, and wear gloves as I got a little on my finger and it was caustic. I notice that the package label did not mention this. Bottom line- i am going to try the old school scotch guard now.

I followed the package instructions and it made my rain jacket waterproof again. I highly recommend this product. I was nervous since I never used a waterproofing product before, but I can guarantee this works and will not ruin your clothes.

Gear Aid has 4.7 of 5.0 stars. The highest number of stars on Amazon. Plan to use it on my ForceField rain gear. Says 1 ounce or 2-tablespoons per article. Reviewers state to soak gear in luke warm water_enough to fully submerge the item for 20 minutes minimum. Spin dry (Don't Rinse) Then throw it in a dryer on low heat for 30-60 minutes to activate the waterproofing. I'll update this review and share my results soon. UPDDATE:; When I opened the bottle the fluid was just like sour milk/globby. I took 1 oz and washed my jacket hoping the water would liquify the Gear Aid but it didn't. My jacket came out all spotted. In reviews a couple people had the same issue. Did it freeze in the back of intelcoms truck? The item was very cold when handed to me. Returning for refund. It does say guaranteed for 2 years. Could simply be a bad batch but I could not find an expiration date on bottle. For $37.00 I admit I'm disappointed.

Treating, washing, and drying your Gore-Tex products assures their on-going, functional use. In fact, it is by washing and drying—drying specifically—that your Gore-Tex products are assured a long, water-proof life. I never knew that until recently when I read their info on their website. This is a great product to add to your wash, thereby treating it. I have a pair of Saucony pants that are Gore-Tex treated and they have lasted me for close to 40 years. Washing them and other Gore-Tex clothing will give them added protection.
