Do these treat styes?

No I would not think styes, unless stated on the tube. These are for very dry eyes, it's basically water with a 1%carbimore.Steys will need a different treatment, if any help I would put in your search, eye drops for steys /pink eye..

How does this carbomer eye gel differ from hypromellose eye drops, besides consistency?

Simplistically saying, it does lubricate better and stay longer. I put it in prior to sleeping and eyes feel so much better in the morning.

Is this product preservative free?

I don't think so. It says do not use with contact lenses so I assume it means there is a preservative

What age could this be used from?

There is no specific minimum age. It is used for dry eyes. If the symptoms persist then you should seek medical advise.
