17 1/2" to the top of the plastic hand hold of the water reservoir cover (with the cover on).  For me, the machine slides under the cabinets just up to that useless piece on the cover that extends up as a finger grip. If they had a flat cover option is probably order it. Oh well, great machine regardless.

Question 3

Can this make a very stout pot of coffee? we like near espresso strength coffee! hoping to be able to make a full pot w/o mess!

Heather, I like strong coffee also. I put in 10 scoops of coarse ground coffee to make a full pot. This is the scooper that came with the Technivorm Moccamaster. You'll have to experiment to see if it works for you. Lisa

Can you use a timer on this machine to come on at a set time

I do. I use a $3.00, 24hr, 30 minute increment mechanical timer with one outlet from wal-mart. It plugs in the wall. I have it set for 05:30. It has a "bypass on" switch on top. If I don't want coffee on any certain day @ that time, I prep the machine and simply do not engage the carafe with its dock. When you wake- engage the carafe and turn the switch to the on position. The switch is merely a bypass to turn the outlet on anytime you wish without disrupting the time sequence. The machine has a auto off feature regardless of any added timers. What this means is:With Carafe engaged, the timer will start cycle @ desired time. When brew cycle is over, machine will auto power off. The timer will be "On" for approximately 22 more minutes, but the machine is off. If you choose to make coffee outside of this time, you can prep the entire machine, leave the carafe disengaged from dock until you wake. Go to machine slide carafe into dock & turn bypass switch on. Note: you must manually turn the bypass back off to resume normal schedule while prepping for a pre-set time. The machine will remind you if you are setting up @ night because if you left the switch in the bypass mode, when you engage the carafe, the orange light will automatically light letting you know power is on. With this method, you leave the master switch on the machine in the on position at all times. I know it sounds complicated, but it's not. My 10 year old has no problem setting it up for us @ night.
