Phoebe and Her Unicorn (Volume 1) [Simpson, Dana] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Phoebe and Her Unicorn (Volume 1) Review: A Girl & Her Unicorn - This comic is about Phoebe and her new friend, a unicorn named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. Marigold Heavenly Nostrils! Really, that is all you need to know to purchase this comic. Just love that funny and clever name! This is a comic book series for grades 4 and up. I read this as part of a reading challenge to read a comic written and illustrated by the same person. This is apparently a syndicated comic now available in book form. There are multiple books in the series. Phoebe is in 4th grade and the other kids think she is a nerd. The most popular girl calls her names like Princess Stupidbutt. Phoebe is throwing rocks in a pond when she hits Marigold by mistake. Marigold grants her a wish. Phoebe wishes for Marigold to be her best friend. The rest of the book tells of their adventures and how other people react to Marigold. I am not a big reader of comics. As a child I preferred a book to a comic. However, this is really well done. The drawings are cute and the characters display a lot of emotion. The text is sweet and funny. The humor will appeal to both adults and children, who will understand the narrative on different levels. This is a story of friendship and both Phoebe and Marigold have a lot to teach each other. The first book leaves me interested to learn how the relationship develops between Phoebe and Marigold. I think this would be a fun book to read with a child. I read this as an ebook, and the illustrations looked good, typically three to four panels to a page. And a final time: Marigold Heavenly Nostrils! Review: Excellent book, I keep going back to reread it! - Phoebe and her Unicorn is an ongoing newspaper comic, so this is just the first in a long series of books that is still being written, the latest as of this comment is volume #17 with volume #18 up for preorder. When I first stumbled upon this comic strip I immediately fell in love with the characters. Phoebe is a girl with a delightfully weird and quirky personality, who becomes best friends with the unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils through chance, and the comic is mostly about their quite believable and wholesome friendship, as well as the wacky hijinks that result from Marigold introducing Phoebe to some facet of unicorn culture. Other notable characters include Dakota--the stereotypical popular girl who is secretly kind of nice beneath her callous exterior, Prunella the Queen of the Goblins, Lord Splendid Humility--a unicorn who is so humble that he hides in bushes and goes through ridiculous lengths to conceal his splendidness, Todd--a miniature dragon that breathes candy and speaks only in 'Rar's, Phoebe's parents, and Max. I can't recommend this book series enough. Although it's targeted mainly toward young girls, I (an adult man) personally found it to be hilarious, wholesome, imaginative, and heartwarming, and the other members of my family I have introduced to it have all agreed. The only thing I suggest is, you should probably spring for the boxed set of volumes 1-4, I went through the first book in like, an hour and had to go back on desertcart right away to get the next few of them.

Fun graphic novel for my 6 year old, definitely a little old for her but still fun for her to learn to read!

My daughter won't stop re-reading this book series!
We discovered this book series through a free book prize from a summer reading program. My 9-year-old daughter devoured the first book and has read the entire series. She is halfway through re-reading the book series. She loves that the books make her laugh. I appreciate the great vocabulary in the books. My daughter has a really hard time putting these books down for anything we want her to do. I can't believe I have to sternly tell my daughter to stop reading to get ready to go to an appointment or wherever it is we need to go because she has such a hard time putting these books down. I used to say, "Honey, put the iPad away, it's time to go." Now it's, "Sweetheart, book the 'Phoebe and Her Unicorn' book away, we have got to leave now. This is the highest compliment we can give. We hope the author will continue to publish more books soon.

A Calvin and Hobbs-like tour of childhood
Phoebe is an energetic young girl with too much imagination, her Unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils is more lackadaisical, content with her own fabulousness. And they are best friends. It's easy to compare this collection of daily comics to Calvin and Hobbs, Like Calvin Phoebe is filled with imagination as well as the pettiness, cruelty and greed that any child has. Marigold is calming and wise but also vain and conceited. And their interaction can lead to some funny jokes. I got this for our two young girls and it provided several nights' bedtime stories. I'm not sure I would pick it up for myself but did the job of entertaining both the kids and adults. We may pick up more.

I can't say enough good things about Phoebe and Her Unicorn
Phoebe and Her Unicorn is charming, witty, clever, and original. Dana Simpson's enchanting and warmhearted comic strip has brought me back to reading the comics. Phoebe and Her Unicorn tells the story of nine-year old Phoebe and her best friend Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, who is a unicorn. These two very different beings from very different backgrounds delight in each others company and accept each other just as they are, flaws and all. The strip was formerly known as Heavenly Nostrils, and was only available online through GoComics.com. It is now nationally syndicated in over a hundred U.S. newspapers. When the comic went into syndication in early 2015, Ms. Simpson went back to the beginning of the story so those unfamiliar with the strip could catch up, but some changes have been made. This book, and it's sequel Unicorn on a Roll, allow readers to read the strips as they were originally written and also lets fans of the new syndicated strip to get caught up. I can't say enough good things about Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Also, Peter S. Beagle, author of the classic fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn," and screenwriter for the 1982 animated feature of the story wrote the forward to this book. How awesome is that? Btw, for those who don't get the strip in their local papers, you can still read it on GoComics.com. Fans will definitely want to add Phoebe and Her Unicorn and Unicorn on a Roll to their home libraries.

Cute, Imaginative, Engaging
I bought this for a 7-year-old's birthday, with the idea that she would grow into it and be challenged by reading it. I read it before giving it to her, and enjoyed it, too. The illustrations are engaging and encourage reading of the words to better understand the humor, which is appropriate and enjoyable for children and adult readers. There is a story to pull you along to make it a very good option for bedtime reading.

Absolutely brilliant - very popular with both boys and girls in our family
I bought this for my 7 year old niece, who really enjoys it, but the humor is just a tad above her level (but it's good stuff for encouraging discussion). However it has quickly become a favorite of her brother (age 10) and my 9 and 8 year old sons (so much so that they'll stay up late reading it together with a flashlight - laughing the whole time). They've moved on to the second book and can't wait for the third one to come out. I've read a bit of it as well and it's absolutely brilliant. Like all really good "kid books" some of the writing is above the targeted level. In my experience kids thrive on that and it encourages them to stretch. It certainly helps that it's really, really funny. I would absolutely encourage you to buy this for any girl or boy in your life who is reading at or above the 4th grade level. Even teens would enjoy this - it's just that good.
