This book , written by a Haitian anthropologist, traces the African origins of Voodoo and its development in the Americas, particularly Haiti. There is a detailed discussion of the Gods, known as loas , their symbols , signs, rituals, ceremonies, and spiritual aspects. Voodoo is a way of life that honors the Ancestors and Divinities of Africa. Milo Rigaud shows the esoteric meanings beyond the rituals and ceremonies.A highly recommended book.

If you know nothing about voodoo start with this one covers all of the voodoo magic! Might want to study obeah next! so it starts out and said these people carry the spirits of the god and they fly around and take over people! then goes into veves and rituals. miss all the old voodoo items use to sell in the tabloids in the 1970s and 80s. the pretty 5 dollar black voodoo barbie dolls snake and frog eggs too! might want to find a good voodoo spell book next! I started to look for voodoo books and found a lot of them missing or none at all this book written way back when 60 years or so ago! well dont know if people got the spirits flying around anymore but this book sure worth it!

Definitely one to add to your magical library. The author is sharing what he has observed and heard over the years as well as his experiences regarding the practice. Please note that the author does not give any "how to's" so if that's what you're looking for, you won't find it in this book and not too many other books for that matter. Voodoo is an oral practice and usually not shared with outsiders or in written format. This is a book that will allow you to see from another person's perspective.

Although I feel that the title is greatly misleading, there is still some invaluable information to be found in this book. The easiest way to describe this book is this: look at the cover of the book closely...this book is basically going to explain everything that is going on, in said picture. I already have a good bit of information on vodoun so the most valuable thing, for me, was the veves and the vodoun pantheon list. If you want true secrets of vodoun, purchase "The Spider and the Green Butterfly" by E.A. Koetting. There are only 500 copies available, so move quickly. But all in all, this was a good book on the "surface" view of vodoun

I can only say wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I wish there was more that I could say but as a Haitian woman I am rendered speechless by this accurate explanation of vodou. By far it is the only one of it's kind that I have ever come across. Wow!

Useful information to compare to other legitimate sources to gain better perspectives of the truth. Needs updated format to make navigation & notes usable.

Das Buch geht auf einige Geheimnisse ein und ist sehr gut geschrieben. Man erhält einen Überblick über die Mythen und es räumt auch klar mit Vorurteilen auf. Es sollte in keiner Sammlung fehlen. Wer sich für Vodou interessiert, findet darin garantiert etwas für seinen Weg. Gelungen ist der Versuch der Kategoriesierung der Loas, wenn man damit auch schon ganze Bücher füllen könnte. Es finden sich auch einige Bilder darin und nebst anderen interessanten Fakten, wird bspw. beschrieben was sich genau in einer Asson befindet, was ich sonst bis jetzt noch in keinem Buch gelesen habe und ich besitze einige. Auch wird der Initiationsritus sehr ausführlich beschrieben.Es macht auf jeden Fall grossen Spass, sofern man der englischen Srache mächtig ist.
