I used 1 &1/4 inch number 6's number 8's were too fat to fit through the holes.

Q: What is the diameter of the screw hole?

You can place thick screws in the holes

Q: Would these be suitable for welding to a steel frame, then screwing into a wooden table top?

Maybe a little small for this. Depends how many brackets you intend to weld to the frame.
