The Dos Passos trilogy USA is an amazing literary achievement. The author immerses ficcional characters in the American History. All this is featured blending newsreels, popular American culture and icon American historical individuals. John Dos Passos puts his ficcional characters in historical situations, giving to the reader an impressive way of observing the development of American society from the end of nineteen century to the thirties. Each ficcional character acts under the real circumstances of events. What is amazing is that the author, mixing a lot of different devices (news, folksongs, cinema events, press statements and so on and so forth), does not for a moment loses the overwhelming poetic pathos of his narratives.Each ficcional character is, notwithsanding, free/responsible for the options she takes. Their failures are the result of their individual shortcomings. It is why Dos Passos work is not only a hymn to the solidarity among the outcasts but also an extremely vivid defense of individualism.The author style is extremely experimental, transporting with it an enormous sense of modernity (speedness, novelty but also individual frustration).Moreover, the USA allows the reader to grasp the mood of American society during not only the period encompassed by the trilogy but also today: e.g., the press influence to create a favourable environment to an external intervention, the propaganda framework trying to diminish the humanity of the occasional American foe,etc.are invariants of American power nowadays.The text, as referred, is extremely poetic and gives a tender room to the footlosers of American society. In fact it sounds as a pessimistic undertaking about North America lost of innocence (the historical period 'narrated' corresponds to the transformation of USA into a Superpower).It is recurrent in some American literary circles to discuss which is the best American Novel. Consideing this kind of bad taste contest as acceptable, the John Dos Passos' trilogy should be very well fitted to fill that honour.

An interesting and important book. Well worth reading.

As good as the recommendation

A powerful book full of truths

La trilogía USA de John Dos Passos es una aproximación coral, estilisticamente muy rompedora incluso si se publicara hoy, a la sociedad estadounidense de la época de la primera guerra mundial.Dos Passos utiliza titulares de prensa, biografías, su propia experiencia como periodista y la vida de una decena de personajes para hablar de las tensiones que había en la sociedad estadounidense de la época. Y lo hace de una forma tan arriesgada, que solo un genio como él podía convertir en una de las obras cumbre de la literatura del siglo XX.Dos Passos habla de las diferencias sociales, de las corrientes revolucionarias en EEUU, de los intereses económicos que llevaron a su país a entrar en la guerra para recuperar los préstamos que JP Morgan había hecho a las naciones aliadas que en 1917, y tras la retirada de Rusia del frente oriental, estaban perdiendo contra Alemania.Pero nada valdría si los tres libros aquí reunidos no estuvieran sostenidos en personajes inolvidables como Charley Anderson (mi favorito), Eleonor Stoddard, Eveline Hutchins, Ben Compton, etc.La edición de la Library of America es, como siempre, una joya pensada en la durabilidad, con papel y encuadernación que garantizan que quienes compren este libro podrán dejarlo en herencia.Lo único que me ha decepcionado de la edición es lo arbitrario de las notas: a veces traducen textos del francés, otras no, y casi nunca aclaran el sentido de algunos sucesos notables en la época en la que están ambientadas las novelas, pero que hoy día han sido olvidados. Son los editores de los clásicos quienes han de asegurarse de preservar no solo el texto, sino también el sentido.En cualquier caso, es una edición muy recomendable, asequible a este precio y una opción mucho más preferible que leer las nefastas traducciones (aunque esforzadas, eso sí) de Edhasa.
