Self Repair
Overall the Kitchenaid blender is an awesome product. The only drawback is the rubber coupler. You can’t blend anything that is hot in the blender or the rubber coupler will melt. I cooked tomatoes to make a sauce and when I went from stove to blender, the rubber coupler melted like butter. Is it a defect or a service cash cow. Like anything else, I searched on Amazon for the part and I found it. Awesome replacement. Saved me at least $49-$50 bucks having it repaired. Simple and easy. Wrench fit perfect, turned the coupler clockwise to remove and screwed the new on in. Awesome!!!!!

Blender Drive Coupler Installed Successfully!
After significant consternation caused by reading past reviews, I went ahead and ordered this product (pair of replacement blender drive couplings--including the 7 mm wrench). My hesitation stemmed from many of the negative reviews concerning the thin, flimsy 7 mm wrench required to hold the motor shaft in order to turn off the remnant of the old blender drive coupling. Upon receiving the shipment, I immediately verified that the thin, stamped metal wrench indeed fit the flattened surfaces of the motor shaft (yes...7 mm is the wrench size); then traced the supplied wrench onto a sheet of paper (in case I needed to "manufacture" a duplicate out of heavier gauge metal on the off chance that the thin wrench might buckle/deform under pressure of removing the old drive coupling). I resorted to use Vice Grips to turn the old coupling to the right for removal while securely holding the thin wrench (remember, the shaft is a left hand thread, so must turn the drive coupling clockwise (to the right) to loosen. As I winced from fear the wrench would bend, I turned the coupling hard, clockwise, and it came loose without any problem (like bending/folding the flimsy metal wrench). Whew! Replaced with new drive coupling (turning it on counterclockwise--to the left without tightening (action of the blender naturally tightens the coupling to the motor shaft). Whew! After using the blender a time or two, I successfully removed the new coupling (and it was tight!) without any problem, using a dampened dishrag for a good grip....just to see if I could...Yay!

Wrench needed alteration but otherwise the replacement went well
Hubby changed the part easily after grinding down the edges of the wrench so that it would fit the space. Our wrench did not bend. He suggests holding down on the wrench once it’s in place, and using channel locks to turn the black plastic part. Remember that it’s a reverse thread. Good luck!

A jar opener might help in removing the old part
Unlike some reviewers, I did not have a problem with the wrench. The instructions were good as well. The only problem I had was loosening the old part. It was on too tight for me to loosen it by hand. The hammer and screwdriver technique shown in some YouTube videos didn't work either. But it came off nicely with the extra leverage provided by a jar opener, like the one in the photo (the wrench is also shown). Some other reviewers have described using a pliers for extra leverage when removing the old part. Remember to turn the old part clockwise to remove it. My blender is model KSB5BU3. It is probably at least 15 years old, but it still works great after replacing the rubber part that wore out.

wrench is too loose for blender shaft
Time will tell how well the rubber coupling does, but I can confirm that the wrench is junky, not a proper fit to the shaft, allowed it to rotate when I was turning the coupling clockwise as instructed. After fussing with it for 30 minutes, and finding a local place that offered to fix it for $25, I found that the bottom of the appliance had a grill where there were moving parts visible when the shaft was turned. By immobilizing from down there with a screwdriver, I was able to use pliers to loosen the coupling, bypassing the need for the wrench. Came right off.

Wrench needed Modification to Fit
Wrench arrived and clearly WOULD NOT FIT within the lugs of the KitchenAid Blender (see first photo)- I had to get a Electric Grinder and grind the shoulders of the wrench down to fit within the Base Lugs (see second photo)- It’s great that the wrench kit comes with TWO (2) replacement gears. Good Value for the Money, if you don’t mind grinding the wrench to fit!

This Part Saved My Blender
15 minutes from the time the Amazon truck showed up my blender was fixed! I read reviews about the wrench being junk but it did work for me. I did have one problem with it though- the wrench was too fat (wide) to go between the uprights that hold the blender jar on top. I had to grind each side of the wrench to get it to go up under the old coupler to be able to remove it. Remember these threaded parts are all left hand threads. Turn the coupler clockwise to remove it.

Saved my thrift shop find
I had picked up a older model Kitchen Aid blender at a thrift shop and was excited for the find. Its a heavy and sturdy model which are hard to find today!!Unfortunately, the dark piece basically disintegrated on the first use. I saw this and picked it up! Replaced it immediately with this piece and I was back in business!! Easy fix without breaking the bank! Still got a bargain!!
