Cook and Let Live: More Vegan Cuisine for the Ethical Gourmet

Great Book for Transitioning to a Healthy Plant-based Diet
Though most of the recipes in this book do not fit my dietary needs, because they contain gluten, soy, vinegar, corn, or nutritional yeast, I did find quite a few excellent recipes that work for me, including dairy substitutes, sauces and veggies. The author does not claim that his recipes are "healthy" (though some of them are). That is not his focus. It is all about vegan food that tastes good and similar to animal products. That makes it an excellent resource for people who want to transition to a plant-based diet, but who still miss the familiar taste and textures of meat, dairy, and eggs. Eventually most vegans lose their taste for those foods, but at first it can be really helpful to have good substitutes. If your reason for choosing a vegan diet is for health, I would suggest reading the Medical Medium books, all of which contain delicious, healthy recipes. However, Cook and Let Live makes a great back-up cookbook for preparing occasional treats for those who are already healthy - and of course you can sort through and choose the healthier recipes in the book. After all, who uses all the recipes in any cookbook anyway?

Delicious vegan recipes
Chef Skye takes vegan meat replacement to the next level. So far I have made the Shredded Chikun and the Roast Turkey from this book and both turned out totally delicious. I have been making my own seitan for quite a few years now and have several recipes that I really like; however, none of them have the texture and taste of chicken and turkey as the recipes in Cook and Let Live do. As we ate the Roast Turkey for dinner, my husband kept shaking his head and wondering aloud how it was possible to achieve the flavor and texture of turkey with all vegan ingredients. I am amazed by how many recipes are included in this book, everything from Prime Cut Roast Beaf to Key Lime Pie, and can hardly wait to try them out.

All the vegan food prep secrets you ever wanted to know!
For the longest time, I've wondered how to make vegan "shrimp" like I've purchased from Asian markets. I'd look at the ingredient list and think, "how does all that go together?" Well, the Gentle Chef figured it out and has shared it with the world. I made the recipe today, and although I know some things to try differently next time, the "Shrymp" turned out fantastic! Better than I expected for the first time making it!!I also made the Porq...shredded style. I followed the very clear instructions exactly and had perfect results! I'm just thrilled and look forward to trying more of his recipes, especially the meat analogues. No more need for Gardeins! (Although they are wonderful.) Thank you Chef Skye!

This book is amazing! Everything Chef Skye does is amazing. There are new recipes and updates to older recipes that will change your Vegan/non-dairy world! The cheese and mock meats (especially the shredded chickun) will blow you away and they are easy to make with his detailed instructions. You'll be a pro at this in no time!

Vegan Alternatives
While I am not a vegan, or even a vegetarian, I try to eat less meat, and Chef Conroy's cookbooks are a great help. Thank you.

Not as useful as I had hoped
I like the general information on vegan meat type products, how to make them and how to cook and serve them. Over all its not brilliant. What I don't like is a good number of his breakfast recipes call for his egg replace products and since I don't know what those are I can't substitute which means that I will not be using those recipes. Maybe it's a good starting cookbook but other reviews hailed him as something special and I just don't see that.

Incredibly tasty results...every time
I have made two soy curl recipes, both delicious, the tofu feta, which is one of my favourite homemade vegan cheese recipes; mine came out more like Boursin. I have also made the bacon, and have the Garden Ham in the oven now. Over the years I have made several recipes from the author’s other books, and they have all turned out as they should and worth the effort. The author’s instructions are second to none.
