Aileen - Life and Death of a Serial Killer [DVD]

Biased propaganda, but entertaining.
The story of this convicted, serial killer is quite well-known and very interesting (as horrible as it is). The filmmaker captures truly powerful moments in real time. It is truly entertaining, but that's where the praise ends. The director is clearly not interested in pursuing the objective truth, but rather in proving his theory to be correct in this apparent sequel to his previous documentary, which had the same goal; make everyone else look guilty and make Aileen appear innocent.Granted, any person has the right to make a film about their point of view, but when the truth is the goal, then the director must put their views aside, allow events to take their course and allow whatever the truth is to reveal itself. This filmmaker has no interest in this and it is something you must accept if you are to watch this film. The truth was crystal clear on camera and in the evidence; this person had a hard life, made bad conscious decisions, knowingly murdered several people, lied under oath as she later confessed to her crimes and admitted to making up stories for sympathy...and then later changes her story. There is no doubt that something is wrong with this woman and that some bad things likely happened to her, but this does not in any way excuse her from exercising her free will to kill others. The filmmaker feels differently, however, even though this woman clearly cannot be trusted to tell the truth. The truth is this; bad things happen to a lot of people, but clearly, we all don't commit murder as most of us take responsibly for our behavior and don't punish people for what others have done to us (also known as, transference). A little advice to the director; Please read, "A Child Called, It" and you might understand what a hard life is and how one still knows what's right regardless of how they were treated.Watch this if you want to witness intriguing testimony, but stay away if you can't handle biased propaganda.

Wow... Heavy subject and very real documentary.
I remember this case when I was a young woman. I felt then that Ailene was "mad" just as Nick Broomfield stated at the end. I too found it disturbing that she was being executed instead of being placed somewhere to hopefully be treated with dignity. It feels true that in her ramblings "they" made good money on her story. I think she was angry and hurt about being betrayed by her only love on tape, betrayed by society who didn't rescue her from being abused and abandoned. After hearing the taped entrapment conversations I believe at that point, she gave up and decided she was going to do her best to die. She never had a life chance. No one reached out to this child who was indeed raped by her brother and other boys, so yes, I believe she is in heaven as she wanted. Nick Broomfield did a fantastic job on this life story and brought out the truth at how all the vultures used Ailene. Watch this film. It is candid and well done.

Good follow-up to the original doc.
I was so angry with so many people after watching the original (Aileen Wuornos: Selling of a Serial Killer). So many people profited, or attempted to profit, off of her it was sickening. I would not say it was a complete travesty of justice, since she did commit the murders, but she did get shafted in many ways. It was apparent in the first doc, and even more so in this one, that Aileen had mental issues. How she passed a psych eval is amazing. Even her last words are obvious to some mental issue. My feelings about the death penalty aside, it did seem apparent that her death sentence being carried out was solely for the publicity for elections and the law enforcement community that was left bruised after it was proven numerous police officer was fishing to make money off the case for a movie. I have always been fascinated by Aileen Wuornos since as long as I can remember. Long before "Monster" came out. Her life was terrible. Horrendous. There are so many things that came out over the years from her mother abandoning her, father in prison, grandfather and brother having sex with her, to her being 13 and having a baby (some say by the grandfather, others a neighborhood pedophile), having to give up the baby and then kicked out of her home to sleep in the woods...in Michigan...in the winter. She was turning tricks for survival...at 13. She was failed by so many. Her parents, family, authorities, etc, at such a young age. There is no wonder why she had anger issues. She slipped through the cracks at every point in her life. The ultimate was then how she slipped through the cracks again and was executed. We will never know the truth of what really happened between her and her victims, but to me, she never seemed as honest, coherent, and detailed as she was when she was describing her attacks that led to the murders in the first trial. She later recanted and said it was not self-defense, but at that point, it was blatantly obvious she just wanted to die. I feel bad for her victims and their families, I do, but I also feel bad that society and the lack of intervention, guidance, and help of any kind, led to these acts happening. Nick Broomfield showed the flaws in the people, asked questions that many had, and showed Aileen at her most vulnerable and most enraged. This is a doc worth watching, but if you haven't, watch the original first.

A good and true account of a serial killer
A good and true account of a serial killer, although had not realized when I made the purchase that all subtitles and DVD box would all be in German

Fragen bleiben bestehen...
