A Must Have For Passing The State Test
Without this study guide, I'm certain I wouldn't have passed the PACT exam on my first try. While there is a lot of info covered in the book, the online and print versions included in this purchase made studying a lot easier. The practice exam questions were similar to what appeared on the test and helped keep me calm throughout since I'm a nervous wreck when I take tests.

No plans this weekend? Learn to teach Speech!
Second book in a series that I bought. I loved the way it was set up and how easy it was to use. I recommend this group of books.

Must Have
I am in the process of studying for my teacher's certification exam and so far this study guide has been an integral part of my preparation. It was strongly suggested that I purchase it as part of my preparation for my exam.So far I'd rate the material and its presentation a 4 our of 5 stars. The most helpful section is the practice quiz questions and suggestions to practice studying smarter.

Does not necessarily prepare you, content-wise
I rarely post product reviewed, folks, but I just took the TExES Speech exam today, and want to share what I discovered about using this study guide as a preparation tool:While it does give you a realistic sense of what the test questions are LIKE...the actual content (ideas, concepts, theories, best practices, etc.) are not necessarily on the exam.I went into the exam room feeling confident and prepared - scored a 97% on my last practice test and reviewed EVERY concept I could find on practice tests from this book, as well as a few other sites with practice exams. BUT - the exam was VERY different from what I studied. I have a master's in Comm, and have been teaching college speech for eight years, and folks - there were some humdinger questions on that exam. (A surprising percentage were related to debate and speech competition rather than speech curriculum, so if you haven't been involved in that side of things, it's pretty rough trying to get to the right answer.)Out of 100 questions on the actual test, I can think of MAYBE three items that I knew were correct because of this particular study guide. One was the name of a theorist that I did not study in college (or don't remember), and I Googled him when I got it wrong on the practice test. I also spent time going over the competition website and manuals, but even with that extra focus there were questions about oral interp selection and preparation that I just wasn't sure of.Here's my point - this is not a bad product. It's helpful to practice what it feels like to answer 100 multiple-choice questions about the field of speech. BUT - don't think that because you learn the material in THIS BOOK, that you will be prepared for the content on the actual exam...it's simply not the same stuff. Imagine that the complete test bank has 2,000 questions - and this book sheds light on 100 of them, basically. (And some of the answer choice explanations on the practice test are truly vague, and don't hold water when you get right down to teaching comm concepts in a classroom.)I walked out of the test room thinking "you either know this stuff from undergraduate or graduate coursework in speech and communication, or you don't." It's VERY difficult to study for, simply because it is soooo broad. That being said, I am more concerned that our state education leadership is putting such minutia on this exam (rather than CORE, KEY concepts and ideas) than I am with the fact that $43 didn't go very far in helping me prepare. (Who's on the board of committee for creating these test items, anyway? Let's have a chat!) :-)So...if you have college notes, or can get your hands on a comprehensive textbook on speech and debate, you may not need this guide. I bought the Kindle version. If I had the hard copy version, I'd be happy to send it on to you!Good luck.

An insult to educators
This is a summary of notes taken by a participant in a lecture/training. Compiled like GRADE SCHOOL BABY THESIS, there is NO ORGANIZATION, NO COHERENCE, NO UNITY. The REPEATED SENTENCES clearly indicate a "COPY AND PASTE" strategy that SHOWS LACK OF PROOFREADING AND EDITING REQUIRED IN PUBLISHING. To include items such as scoring (using of Mode, median Mean), IEP, Controversy over teacher expectation (p.107), Classroom Management, Wide range of achievement test (p120), strategy areas for reading Instruction -p127)..to name a few boldly reflects that the people behind this- just grabbed and snatched any and every word that would fill the pages of the book (NOTHING TO DO WITH SPEECH) and Overcharge the consumers. I have seen a lot of review materials and this is the only one that does not provide a rationale for the wrong answer(s). The footer on every page is so strong about the copyright disclosures, but in all and every page that mentioned "based on research--No Source.....or "the research says"--- and NO SOURCE provided. They provided a website as "BONUS" ...not as a reviewer but MORE ADVERTISING for their company, because it would be " too bulky to ship" and you might end up paying more than $100 instead of $50. The review provided here about the guy who got almost a perfect score in the test could be one of the guys in the team who aced his ACT test (Go Search Google). AMAZON was so good in shipping the item as promised, but they should be cautious of companies using their services as this might displease their customers as others have had already. Over ALL the PRODUCT is a HUGE INSULT to the TESTING/TEACHING profession. THE PURCHASE PRICE IS NO DIFFERENT FROM A HIGHWAY ROBBERY IN BROAD DAYLIGHT-- BEWARE!!
