Document-Based Assessment for U.S. History

This is a great resource for US History teachers. For the past few years, I have taught World History and have used the WH version of this resource, which is great for teaching students how to approach documents. When I found out that I was being switched to US History, this was my first purchase. It has a wide range of topics and questions, which is really nice. If I am out of the building, these work great for sub work.

As a middle School (social Studies) Teacher I have learned to really enjoy this book.It has 20 different themes in American history (the most important and studied ones for the most part). Each theme has a Historical background and about 4 to 6 documents on that specific theme.My only criticism is that I do wish there were more than just 20 themes, and I would also have liked more map interpretation (there are a number, just not as many as I would like to).Great book to use if you are looking to include DBQ's in your lessons!WORTH THE MONEY!

Absolutely love this DBQ book. The questions and prompts are a bit challenging for students that may be below reading level or struggle with reading comprehension. However, an easy fix for that is to put students in pairs or to do it together as a class. I started to use these DBQ and have already seen my student's critical thinking skills greatly improve. The quality of the book, pages and look is also good.

Some very leading questions. These questions are meant to have the students come to the conclusion the author wants them to, not open ended thinking where they can draw their own conclusions.

If your middle school children are learning to write a DBQ( document based question) this is a wonderful aid for them It helps review the concepts needed to learn and perfect . The book has nice examples for practice. Of course... the student has to sit down and actually do the practice essays and that is another issue altogether at this age.

Good workbooK. Great classroom support..

Good one to one teaching material.

I'm using the HS book with Middle School. I like this for giving them something advanced and working on the essays together.
