Alpha-Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers

We love Alpha-Phonics. My child could read first readers like Frog and Toad, Little Bear, Owl at Home, etc. when we started Alpha-Phonics. So I can’t comment on starting from the beginning steps of reading with this primer. I can say by time we got into chapter books I noticed my daughter was reading but simply guessing words based on context clues. I realized the original phonics books we used didn’t help her because they had both pictures and too many context clues. Although my daughter learned to sound out simple words and knew many other phonics rules, she didn’t know the more complex blends and sounds (long a as ai, oy as oi, zh as si and su, etc). We just started a few months ago and I have already seen a huge improvement in her phonics knowledge.Alpha-Phonics is a stripped down, hard core phonics workbook which eliminates guessing and makes the child really learn phonics in order to properly sound out all words. There are no pictures and a good amount of nonsense words which really is the true test of phonics and reading knowledge. With that being said, we do VERY small lessons for short time periods because this book is dry but presents the correct way to learn the beginning phonics rules.

This is a great product. Before I bought this book I had hundreds of flashcards so it’s nice to have all that information in one book. My son is doing great and reading well.It takes the headache out of homeschooling. My four-year-old is eager to show what he knows.

This book is so good. My husband is homeschooling our 5 year old starting in August and he wanted to start with this to introduce him to things. He is even started lesson 1 with our 3 year old and she does well. I highly recommend this if you are thinking about it.

I used this phonics program to teach all 5 of my children to read. Of all the programs I tried, this is the absolute best. Now my children are grown with children of their own and they have chosen to use this program also. This is an excellent book!!
