Lessons in Classical Painting: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier Kindle Edition

This is by far the most helpful book on painting I have ever read. First of all, the writing is philosophical, beautiful, and inspiring. Secondly, the technical information, especially on color mixing and theory, is invaluable. Although it requires more thought, patience, and practice, the classical approach to painting rewards the artist with the satisfaction of understanding.

This is a very detailed and well illustrated high quality book for the artist who wants to master traditional representational oil painting. I used to teach oil painting at the college level and would use this as a textbook. The lessons are thoughtful and move progressively from value to color study. I highly recommend this book to any painter at any level of development. I consider myself a professional, but everyone has more to learn.

This is by far one of the most useful books on the underpainting technique. I saw it after I had read her book on Drawing and it used my skills by half at least. she writes well and actually gives you practical lessons to achieve , if you are not serious about painting for thousands a week then do not buy this book, give it to a student who is willing to put in the time to find his chops.

Great book - I’ve shared it with my students who are learning to paint with oil. This is a great book for understanding color theory and giving a beginner good habits. It also provides the seasoned painter reminders and new lessons. I like the technical aspect of the information provided. This is an excellent book for any artist’s library.

This is an amazing book on painting. It teaches you how to see as a painter, and focuses on overall questions of composition, value, form, etc. rather the step-by-step approach offered in many other books. I'd much rather see something that tries to impart universal approaches to visual art than a how-to on painting every subject matter imaginable. If you're interested in painting as an art, buy this book.

As a classical painter, I was curious to compare ideas. I love the book, it is well written and well organized, with refreshing insights and ideas.

Wow, great book. I wish it had been larger for more money though. Some of the images are hard to see.

I've been painting for 50 years with great teachers and all that, but this makes for a wonderful reference for things forgotten or for more practice in some areas and some new thoughts on approaching the canvas. Great read.

A beautifully written and well produced book with wonderful paintings reproduced in it.The guidelines are clear, and for me, really took the fear out of trying to produce oil paintings again after years of not painting.

Very well written and easy to read. Chapters are not placed well in the book to my taste but descriptions and pictures are great so it’s 5 stars :)
