My Milk Will Go, Our Love Will Grow: A Book for Weaning Paperback – Illustrated, January 28, 2020

I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding for two years and got this book for gentle weaning. I wanted to start with night time and then move to day weaning. This book is so special. I read it during our final nursing session of the day for a week with my toddler. The book features a conversation between a toddler and the mama about weaning and it shares all of the concerns that a little one may be going through. It empathetically connects to both mama and baby’s emotions about the weaning process. My little one was successfully weaned during the night without any major problem. I’d like to thank it was thanks to this book. For all mamas who want to assure your little one that even when “ milk goes, your love will grow,” get this amazing book! Thank you to the author and artist for this work!

This book is so sweet. It has really helped with weening. It normalizes all the big feelings that come with this change and reassures little ones. I don’t read the story exactly as it’s written. I change the wording a bit to suit us. The illustrations are quite nice. He requests this book often!

I got two weaning books - this one, and one called "Loving Comfort". My child gravitated to the cartoony pictures in the other book, and first seemed a bit scared of the pictures in this book. But the actual story is good, and the way it was presented helped my child feel like she wasn't the only kid going through this life changing transition. We had many conversations based on both weaning books, and decided that we would have morning cuddles instead of nursing when mama's milk was gone. And then one day she just cuddled me and didn't ask for milk 🥲

We started reading this book a few weeks before fully weaning my 22 month old. It really helped her understand what was happening. She would ask to read her “milk book” and now, when she would usually be asking for milk (eg after nap) she says “milk book”, “all done” and we go have a snack instead.

Weaning can be a physical and emotional journey for a mother and child. When I read this book, I was impressed with how its beautiful illustrations complimented its dialogue perfectly. This would be a helpful read for a mother and her child but it would also be helpful for just a mother to read. Its simple and important message could provide a sense of peace to a mother who needs to wean a child for reasons beyond her control as well as a mother whose child abruptly weans his/herself for reasons unknown. It is certainly the perfect read for a mother and child to read together to accompany the weaning process. Mrs. Elder demonstrates her sensitivity, insight and wisdom through the words she chooses to explain this journey.

Purchased to read with my toddler who I am in the process of weaning. I purchased this book and another for this purpose and this is not the favorite. The story doesn’t flow well as it’s written, it goes back and forth between the mother and child’s voice with only context to help determine who’s speaking. I add “baby says” or “mama says” when reading aloud. Also the pictures aren’t as polished as you see in most kids books but really it’s the colors. They’re on the dull/ gray side and my son isn’t excited to read it. I really like the sentiment and how this gives great respect to the child’s perspective on the topic but think this book could use a good rewrite to make it less clunky to read aloud and fresh pictures with bright colors.

This book is so special in every way. Deeply talks to the soul, to the underlying fears and unknowns and truly provides comfort to both the toddler and Mama 💕🙌 illustrations and text are super perfect. If only they'd keep writing/drawing for all kinds of children's issues! Great pair! Especially important for this big transition.
