Well built good equipment
I am working on a system to improve hearing for aging people and needed a middle-priced quality instrument. Have been using this in a variety of ways for a month now and it works great. The extra range (plus or minus 15 dB instead of the usual 12 dB max) is helpful for what I do. And I find the number of frequency bands are plenty. I appreciate that DBX allows signal ground to be lifted from the cabinet in case you have ground loop problems. Sign of good engineering in my opinion. My only negative reaction is that the input and output have only the balanced 3-pin style or mono 1/4 inch phone plugs (music industry standard I suppose) whereas rca connectors would be helpful for some of us.

Great investment
Oh my God, I bought a graphic equalizer! Not for my system (nothing wrong with it), my room or my music. I bought it for me and my 78 year old ears. I have a recent audiogram that suggest that I might as sell my tweeters for all the good they do me. My downward slope begins about 2k and its down quite a bit at 8k where the reading stops. Besides my audiogram I have noticed the sounds of certain instruments diminished or absent in familiar recordings. For example, I used to hear a lightly struck cymbal on my recording of Ravel’s La Valse. Its just not there. A harpsichord is a no show on some early music.I bought the dbx 1231 Dual-Channel, 31-Band Equalizer. It meets my absolute requirement: balanced in and balanced out.I worried about a number of things before my purchase: would the music sound unnatural, would it add a significant level of noise, would it diminish other sonic attributes such as sound staging, dynamic range? Would it distort on loud sudden passages, would massed string tone be strident?Well I am greatly relieved. The overall sonic performance seems to be improved. Among other qualities, the sound stage seems a bit more transparent. I can hear more of the hall within which classical music was recorded.I feel that I am now hearing what I’ve been missing for the last few years.I‘m only boosting 2, 3, 5,6,8,10 and 12k, the first five by about 4db and the latter two by 6db.,The effect of the EQ is to restore the sound of old recordings to what I heard 35 years ago before my high frequencies took a nose dive. Jazz at the Pawnshop is a really good example of this. The unit itself is easy to use and is rather flexible. Just take your XRL cable from your source or preamp and plug it into the XRL input. Install a XRL cable from the unit’s output and install it into your amp’s input.P12 power plant, Ayon 35 CD/SACD (tube output stage), Ayon Spirit PA amp, Klipsch Forte IIIs.

A very good component
I wasn't expecting the fine quality of this eq both its sturdiness and its eq ability.. I have good monitors and good headphones and I don't hear a "lick" of any white noise. The sliders are well built and whether you up the sliders for more gain or lower the sliders for lower game, it doesn't sound like something is missing or something is added I'm a blues musician.. and have 3 resonators.. for you reading this that owns a resonator.. you know the difficulties in get an even sound..The DBX 1215 puts me in the drivers seat.. there is one caveat .. the buttons for the low cut and button for a smaller or larger ability (sliders) you need to have something around it like a pen to push them in because they are recessed. I thought something was wrong with my unit.. but evidently its that way so as not the push em' in by mistake.. Thats the only con.. I always stayed away from an eq because I thought it would be obvious.. and I would just use the positioning of the with acoustics or amp with some very decent miikes... I still do that of course but now I feel I have complete control. Great product.!

This thing delivers a better sound quality than even a subwoofer for a much cheaper price!
