How We Got Here
Interesting, informative. There is a lot of useful background which helps makes sense of what is happening in Eastern Europe today. My only criticism is that the writing is not engaging.

True History
Excellent book for the history buff, or anyone who wants to know why. He makes reading history fun and interesting. True, as it is not one sided or filled with opinions. You will learn somethings you never knew, without reading 450 pages. Made to be to the point, so it does not become boring.

Read The 1-Star Reviews - They're Accurate
As noted by other reviewers, this book suffers from several deficiencies: simplistic prose; illegible maps; reliance on a limited number of references, including a heavy dependence on the Encyclopedia Brittanica; no noted author; and just an overall lack of depth. I would add to that, that the book, while admittedly a history book, devotes more than 2/3rds of its content to pre-20th century, and that too much of those discussions focus on the histories of "other countries" such that it almost seems as if the narratives are probably "lifted" from other "Captivating History" books. There is also no Index, or other organizational guide to covered subjects, except for a general Table of Contents. The book does contain numerous interesting pictures and maps, the latter of which might be useful if viewed with a magnifying glass. And, I did learn from the book, which is why I gave it 3 stars. But overall, I can't recommend it.

Making History Clear...
Very interesting reading. You hear of these countries on the news and wonder why such things are going on. After reading this (History of Eastern Europe) it makes clear the conflicts that has plagued this area of the world for centuries.

A whirlwind synopsis, but very well done.
The writing seemed very accurate, without any obvious bias. While it is hard to boil down a comprehensive history of that many countries into a normal-length book, the author has a produced a very good work.

A concise history of Eastern europe with an abundance of colorful historical maps
Covering eastern europe from prehistory to the present, this gives a great background to an area of europe too often given short shrift in most histories of europe.
