Jack is back!
Jack is back! any real 24 fan knows that fact alone is worth 5 stars in itself.I'm sure you know the score by now: The story picks up sometime over a year after the events of season 6 and follows Jack over the course of 2 hrs of saving/ending lives in the African nation of Sengala.Ok, so this isn't a full season of 24 and as such you can't approach it with the same level of expectation. As you watch this you'll realise just how brief 97 minutes can be: it isn't anywhere near long enough to pack in all the twists and turns of a full season but then i never really expected it to. This is for all those 24 fans who find themselves wondering "What happened when Jack was undercover with the Salazars?" or "What actually happened in China?" or "Where has Nina been for the last year?". Of course, it doesn't actually answer any of those questions but what Redemption does offer is an insight into what is going on between seasons so that by the time season 7 comes along you'll feel like you have at least a few of the answers to all those questions that you can't help but ask when you start a season. Most crucially, in my opinion, Redemption re-affirms what is so great about 24. I found that by season 6 i was beginning to forget what i loved about Jack; sure, he's a killing machine - but there's more complexity to his character than first meets the eye and it's this complicated, inner turmoil that makes Jack even more of a hero. I had serious worries that Jack's personal demons would shape him into a colder man than the one we've seen so far but thankfully Redemption offers you a chance to see Jack as a calmer, softer and ultimately more likable character. This can only bode well for season 7.I'd be lying if i said Redemption didn't have flaws. It's definately not a classic in it's own right but that's not the point and in the grand scheme of 24-ness this may well prove to be a vital part of a so-far utterly thrilling story. If you love 24 you'll love this. If you don't love 24 then you won't. It's as simple as that!

You NEED this before season seven
Set between series six and seven, this is essential viewing for the 24 fan! Jack is in Africa, trying desperately to hide out and be anonymous, but life catchesd him up in a most dramatic way, and as this amazing DVD draws to a close, you are not sure whether to scream at the TV for him NOT to do it, or DO it (to tell you what I am talking about would be a plot spoiler, but when you see it you will understand). It sets the scene totally for season seven, and given that one of the extras is a full 17 mins of the first episode in season seven, you quickly realise the connection and how it will play out in the fullness of season seven. In short, you NEED this to understand season 7!Very much worth the buy - just make sure you get the extended cut and not the standard one, as the extra minutes really do make the difference!

Redemption: Good.... Series 7: AWFUL!
Redemption is a really refreshing take on 24. Even though it's only 90 minutes long, it puts Jack in new surroundings as he attempts to hide away living a normal life. What a relief to see new characters played by established actors, in new terrain. Although the plot does touch on the heavily overused government corruption angle, the effects of this are played out in exciting and unexpected scenarios. You don't miss the main characters from earlier series as the plot is good enough not to need them.Redemption is clearly an attempt to bring Jack back to the city where he can fall into the plot that will be series 7. In many ways it is enjoyable, but a couple of things are really starting to wear thin, and some are plain ridiculous... After following Jack from the first series, we've all decided to ignore the fact that he is the world's unluckiest man. We've also come to ignore the fact that he can dodge thousands of bullets and single-handedly take down teams of evil commandos. Redemption sadly doesn't attempt to do anything different here, but the problem comes with the preview of season 7 that is included in the bonus features.Ignoring Jack's foibles, there is one aspect of 24 that I absolutely hate, and that is the revival of dead characters. With each series, the writers have tended to be more and more creative as they attempt to keep things interesting. However, for the next series the writers have a tougher job each time brining the characters into the new plot and keeping consistency. So you can imagine my (sad) surprise when Tony Almeda appears as the new bad guy! That's right, 24's best and most loyal character that was sadly injected with a lethal substance and died is now back in a new evil guise! As an audience maybe for season 7 we are expected to suspend both belief and intelligence?!?Anyway, that review will have to wait, and its not fair to mark Redemption down for this lack of creativity. For now, if you like 24, buy Redemption. Just don't rush to put on the series 7 preview after you've finished it!

Jack is Back
As far as I am concerned '24' is a cracking series. 1,2,3 and 6 being my favourite (not watched series 7 as yet)Redemption finds our hero working at an isolated village school in a fictitious African country which is embroiled in a coup. As usual Jack finds himself in a perilous predicament and with much trickery and skulduggery manages to extricate himself only to be shipped back to the US to face a trial by the senate.Enter series 6 - however it is worth watching 'Redemption' prior to season 6 as it sets up the new series and in some ways concludes series 5.Another JB extravaganza - if you like 24 then watch Redemption.
