A treasure for food scholars.
This book is a wonderful reference for getting to know what foods are what, their medicinal properties and how to store them and in some cases how to use or cook them. It’s an invaluable resource by beloved food scholar, Rebecca Wood.Illustrated by me.

Outstanding Reference Source
I checked this book out of our local library and was so impressed with the information provided I had to purchase. Found an excellent used copy through Amazon. If you are interested in what you are taking into your body- then you will find this Encyclopedia a very valuable tool. The author offers descriptions that include traditonal medicinal and nutritive benefits of whole foods and in addition- their relation to the Ayurvedic system of health. I found the author's personal asides and recipe suggestions a charming bonus- this New Whole Foods Encyclopedia by no means reads like a dry reference tome but more along the lines of a compendium of excellent information compiled by an old friend.

Excellent Reference + No color photos whatsoever =
While this is a wonderful book in many respects (covering a large amount of material with fairly detailed descriptions) there are no color photos of any of the whole foods listed and very very few sketch drawings. The nature of the book lends itself to research and discovery. The book's few pictures will drive you to look elsewhere for information and an accompanying photo.

Whole Foods
I like to be able to sit down and look up information on Whole Foods that people tell me are good for me. I want to read it myself and back up or dismiss their claims. This is one of the best books to do that!

This book is very informative. A great resource!
My mom wrote this book! I am biased. I love the food she cooks and am impressed with her vast knowledge of food.

Comprehensive, knowledgeable, readable
I use this book to find out about a particular food -- its benefits and whether to use it at all. I can only say that Rebecca Wood possesses an 'encyclopedic' knowledge about foods, their use, and much of it comes from her own earth experiences. Cooling and warming foods, Ayurvedic Medicine introduction, and some recipes.
