A dose of early Floyd
It was 1971 and the walls were starting to melt. Someone calls the DJ and asks to hear a Pink Floyd song. Who? we mumble... 20 minutes later we hear this music that sounds like a bad trip but we're all digging it as the night closes in......next week at the record shop I pick up my first Pink Floyd LP Relics, which has that song, Careful With that Axe Eugene... and it's not the same version! OK, so what, the album is pure psychedelia, consisting of singles and B-sides that span the group's career before Meddle, their next album. The 4 songs beginning Side 2 are about as spacey as anything Floyd would ever do later.Years later, after all my LPs had been sold, Relics remained in my memory as an album worth having on CD. But until this issue, it's been treated like a step-sister that nobody cares about. And while it still doesn't restore the original cover image that I loved so much, the art on this one isn't too bad...The remastering is fine, the music from this era doesn't need the boom box treatment. For both old fans and new, and a flashback of nostalgia for me.

Same remaster from 1995, with updated artwork.
For those of you like me who purchased all of the Why Pink Floyd? releases back in 2011, including the Immersion Box Sets and even A Foot in the Door, you may have wondered why Relics was left out of that project. Sure, 7 of the 11 songs on this CD are available on other albums, but for a completist, having updated remastered versions of Biding My Time, Paintbox, Julia Dream, and Careful With That Axe, Eugene, is absolutely worth paying for another copy of Relics. So, when I spotted this 'new' version, I was really hoping it would feature new remasters similar to the 2011 WPF? campaign. Sadly, this is just a simple repackaging effort and after repeatedly comparing the 1995 CD versions to this CD, I could not spot a single element that would suggest that the recordings themselves were improved in any way. That's not to say that this is still not a very worthwhile purchase if you do not already own a copy of the album. Relics features 11 songs - all gems - from the pre-Meddle period of the Floyd. So, if you're curious about their pre-Dark Side of the Moon material, this would be a PERFECT place to start. You get the two most successful Syd Barrett-penned singles in 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play,' as well as 2 additional Barrett cuts from Piper at the Gates of Dawn. You also get the aforementioned 4 songs that are not available anywhere else (save for Paintbox, which has showed up on a number of compilations - all pricey - such as the Piper 40th anniversary box set from 2007 and the 'Early Singles' companion CD that was in the Shine On Box from the 90's).Overall, for the price and the quality of the music, it's a no-brainer for any PF fan. However, if you were hoping this updated version had improved sound quality over the 1995 CD, it's not. I guess one remaster is enough!

Pink floyd...
Una raccolta per quei tempi particolare, con Arnold Layne che era uscita solo come singolo e Careful with that axe Eugene che era uscita solo live...

Superb overview of early Pink Floyd.
This album was available very cheaply on vinyl from the "Music For Pleasure" label in the uk, in the 70's. Everyone I knew (apart from me) had a copy back then! After seeing the superb "Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets" playing live in Perth I decided to get a copy, as much of the material was played by Nick Mason's band during the concert. Guy Pratt even mentioned the album in an introduction to "The Nile Song". The album is far better than I remembered it, with a great selection of early PINK FLOYD tracks, including some from the soundtrack albums that I have never bought. Well worth the money, even if it is not "half price" any more!

Excellent intro to early Pink Floyd.
I bought this album upon its release on vinyl beck in the late '60s early '70s and back then I only bought it because the only song on it I didn't have was Roger Waters' beautiful and ethereal "Julia Dream",the same goes for this CD."Julia Dream" never appeared on "Piper at the Gates of Dawn","Saucerful of Secrets" or "Umma Gumma" .Relics is a "best of" these 3 releases and as for "Julia Dream",I'm not quite sure, because I don't have it on any of my original vinyl from back in the day.Having said all that, this CD is a great intro to their earliest releases and really is worth buying just to have "Julia Dream" on your playlist IMHO the song is that fabulous.Songs such as "See Emily Play","Arnold Layne","Bike","Interstellar Overdrive" and "Paintbox" are all classics and I would imaging that anyone who buys this release and doesn't have their first 2 or 3 releases, will likely go and buy the full length albums upon hearing this excellent CD.
