No the TV does not have to be HD this antenna can be used on any tv and it works very good clear pictures, and more channels.

I screwed the coax cable to the rf in port. hd tried hdmi 1, 2, and 3 as well as tv and the rest. get a blue screen and "no signal" . any suggestions?

Make sure to screwed the coax cable to Ant in port, You need to use your remote control and go to settings then scroll down to the menu that shows imput or source. Then choose Air or ANTENNA not CABLE. Also look in the settings menu for channel search to scan for available channels in your area, if your TV is an old TV, not HDTV, you may need to buy a converter box to get TV signals.
