Does this chalk contain lead?

Lead is not listed on the package. It's just chalk and I have had excellent results in removal from cotton on polyester.

What is the diameter of the chalk?

If they haven't changed it, unsharpened, it measures 1.4 mm. I am an artist and I have the tools to do exaact measurement. It's not a soft chalk. Not pastel either. It's a hard chalk.

How do you change the chalk?

All you have to do is push the yellow end. the chalk will slide out.

Does it mark well on knits?

I have not used it on knits but, I thinkbit would work.
