NASA Mission AS-508 Apollo 13 Owners' Workshop Manual: 1970 (including Saturn V, CM-109, SM-109, LM-7) - An engineering insight into how NASA saved the crew of the crippled Moon mission

The author was involved in Mission Control on Apollo 13
Book has lots of informative photographs and diagrams about the spacecraft systems involved & detailed text about how their loss or function was managed to ensure astronaut survival. Can say there is at least one directly relevant illustration on every page. That the author was a NASA employee involved in Mission Control's rescue efforts on the Apollo 13 mission is of fundamental importance. I found text of a 2018 interview of him by the BBC's "Sky at Night" magazine. A British citizen, he ended up in the US working for NASA via a scholarship program. The interview is well worth finding and reading, as is this book. Among its features I like, the book has a couple appendices which go well in to the structure and equipment of the command module and the lunar module.

Farewell, Haynes...
Since I already wrote a fairly detailed review of the original edition of this book right after it was published, I'll avoid boring the reader by rehashing all of the points I've already made. The 50th-anniversary edition contains all of the material already included in the 2013 release, plus two brief chapters totaling 18 pages, which focus on world reaction, the investigations into the cause of the accident, and changes implemented into future Apollo CSMs. It also has a proper stitched binding this time around, rather than the awful glued ones Haynes used to insist upon. It's still the most detailed of the six Apollo manuals Haynes published; every page is brimming with NASA jargon, technical details and asides, diagrams, telemetry readouts, photographs, and flight plan pages. Even though David Baker is definitely more of a "sentence assembler" than a writer, there's enough raw detail here to keep serious space buffs satisfied for a while. As Haynes has recently decided to unceremoniously pull the plug on future titles in their "Owners' Workshop Manual" series, leaving a number of talented writers high and dry, and killing some potentially fascinating books just months before publication, I'm writing this review with some sadness. I've purchased more than 100 Haynes titles in the last eight years and this is almost certainly going to be the last. There are few things more frustrating than being a loyal customer for years, only to have one of your favorite product lines dropped without a good explanation. It's even more frustrating knowing that the folks over at Haynes actually read my reviews and would sometimes listen to my criticisms. Thankfully, Crecy Publishing UK will be publishing expanded versions of two of Dr. Baker's aborted Haynes books (on the Saturn I/IB and F-111) and an expanded edition of his X-15 "manual" later this year. As for Haynes's other writers, we'll just have to wait and see.If you already own the 2013 edition, you don't REALLY need this edition. If you don't, it's definitely worth owning if you're seriously interested in the technical aspects of Apollo. Just don't get attached to the publisher as I did!

Perfect addition to collection, But…
Great book however it arrived with the lower cover having impact damage due to the light packaging it was shipped in.

An excellent incredibly detailed book
Having watched the film and read the book of the film, I thought I knew all there was to know about the astonishing Apollo 13 rescue. Not so! This Haynes manual really does fill in any gaps and thoroughly explains everything, whilst keeping the story readable & exciting. How is this possible? Simple - the author, David Baker, was there, working in the Houston control room and helping keeping the astronauts alive. A lot of the illustrations come from his original highly detailed Flight Plan and the whole book really does cover all bases.Don't bother with the other Apollo 13 books - this is the definitive one and I doubt it can ever be bettered.
