Can it keep the door open for long? I'd like to use it in a fire door with a self closing chain mechanism

It doesn't keep the door open, it is for assisting the door closing or for softening the closing action of the door. I have used in reverse to prevent the slamming of a door which so far has worked quite well, the door still swings shut but is no longer slams.

The hallway is only the width of the door with walls either side, so i'm wondering if this is suitable given the arm sticks out a long way.

I think the door will be too close the wall to get full opening

Can it be used on an external gate?

no only suitable for internal doors

How can I reduce the opening effort

I have not discovered that It is stiff but a useful deterrent to small children here
