Good value
We purchased this knife with coupons at Bed, Bath & Beyond and were so pleased that we ordered yet another at the same price via Amazon.com. This knife fits among mid-range priced knives, yet seems high-end. It is weighted comfortably to the hand and cuts amazingly well. It's 4.5 inch blade sometimes seems a bit long to me, but I suspect that's because my previous knives had the shorter 3.5 inch. If length of blade is not an issue, this is a superb value.

Great knives, absolutely love using them.
I love Calphalon knives. We've had Calphalon Contemporary 5 and 7 inch Santoku knives, a 6 inch Utility knife, and an 8 inch Chef's knife for years and they've not disappointed - no rusting, no discoloration, keep their edge very well. All the knives are well balanced and very pleasant to use.Just make sure you use a good quality knife sharpener and you won't be disappointed.

excellent steak-knife, good cheap kitchen knife
i own 4 of these and use them as steak knives. i don't like the standard serrated steak knives because (a) they are hard to sharpen (b) the serration tears flesh, which with some cuts is a shame. the 4 1/2 inch lengths makes this calphalon parer a great (and cheap and good looking) steak knife. considering the size it has some heft to it, and if you hone them before use (and prolly even if you don't) they will cut through meat as if it were proverbial butter.as a cook's knife, it's good as a parer, but a so-so choice for anything else. it also may come down to personal preference - i personally prefer heft in a kitchen knife, but also know some excellent cooks that prefer to work sith lightweight, smaller knives. however, for the price, it is undoubtedly great value.there is no info o the blade as to the steel type, but calphalon advertises "high carbon german steel", and the knife keeps a very good edge, and in 2 years -with proper care, always handwash your knives, please- the knife doesn't spot or rust.i own many high end knives, and the best thing i can say about this knife is that -irrespective of price point- it is not out of place in the knife block among much pricier knives, and that i actually love it as a steak knife i can always keep sharp.

Not for children
Very sharp, great for precision cutting. I'm left-handed, and this knife works just as well for me as it does for my right-handed girlfriend (unlike some of those "other" brands). After cleaning, I'm always finding the knife in a different kitchen drawer. I suspect a neighbor is coming in and using the knife when I'm not there. If that's not a great endorsement for a knife, I don't know what is.

Calphalon does not fulfill warranty on known knife recalls
I have been buying Calphalon since 2011. Knife set I bought is breaking. I have learned of manufacture recall after contacting Calphalon about broken knives. The multiple emails have all been responded to from different individuals stating that pictures provide are not sufficient in processing warrant claim. These knives are not cheap. I recommend purchasing another brand since customer service does not fulfill warranty.

Great paring knife! i needed one more knife to fill in an empty slot in my Calphalon® 17 Piece Contemporary Knife Block Set. I find tht i use my paring knife out that set more than any other knife..Now i have a spare! These knives keep an edge well..do not stain or rust and have extremely comfortable handles.. I highly recommend!

Cast Iron Core - not Stainless Steel
I bought this knife, along with a half a dozen other Calphalon pieces, to make a set last year (April, 2014). Today, while cleaning out the dishwasher, I dropped this particular knife. Much to my surprise, it broke in half. It must have dropped just about horizontally as it sheered off at 90 degrees to the shank. I thought these knives were "stainless steel." From looking at the fracture, it appears to have an inner core of fine cast iron with a coating of stainless steel. I had fully expected all these knives to be totally stainless steel. It is made in China with a trade mark of "German Steel". The cachet of "German Steel" is quality; this appears not to be the case here. I just am flabbergasted at this. I am assuming that all the rest of my Calphalon knives are like this also. It's a far cry from my previous set of "Chicago Cutlery" that I used and sharpened for years without any problems. I would not recommend any of Calphalon knives for this reason. Cheap. Period.

Blade broke after two months.
I got these to add to a set I've had for at least 3 years with minimal resharpening. However, the blade on one of these new ones broke after 2 months cutting cheese (insert tasteless joke here). I'm disappointed there is only a 30 day return. I'll chalk it up to a fluke.
