why this trail shoe is thoughtfully designed for trail runners
Some observations and opinions about the ASICS Gel-Kahana 8 trail shoe: there is a removable quality inner sole; thick woven laces aren't too long and stay tied without needing to double knot; very flexible sole with two 'hinge' channels in the forward part of the sole; stiff heel counter with great padding provides good side to side support; heel counter has a padded and flexible half moon at the top to provide space for the Achilles tendon; the tread is aggressive and does a good job providing protection over small, pointed rocks; the spongey-ness of the entire gel sole is noteworthy while going downhill with more force on the foot, as the entire foot remains comfortably sunken into the shoe and doesn't travel/slip; the tongue is thick enough so you don't feel the laces across the top of your foot; there is a 1" nylon slot sewn on top of the tongue where the laces cross through to keep the tongue in place; this shoe runs somewhat narrow in the toe box; durable thick weave of nylon uppers doesn't ventilate especially well. Author of this review runs 60-70 miles per week exclusively over irregular, undulating forest trails that are a mix of soft earth and crushed gravel surface.

Fantastic everyday shoe for people who overpronate when they walk
I'm a recreational tennis player who experienced a "low grade" ankle sprain after accidentally rolling my ankle on a tennis ball on court. No surgery needed and was supposed to be a 6 week full recovery...ha! That was 2.5 years ago. The pain was so bad in the year that followed, even as I got my rest and did my PT rehab rebuilding muscle/stability. My recovery was fast tracked once I switched to Asics, specifically, the Gel Kahana 8 along with the Gel Foundation 13. I got both well under $100, and coupled with my insert (also meant for overpronation) I'm nearly 100% now and playing match play tennis again. I couldn't even do basic walking without pain for over a year so this is not a review about extreme sports use. I've probably been wearing the wrong support sneakers for my foot/arch type my whole life until now. I use these for everyday use, virtually no wear and tear after 1.5 years of continuous use. I don't play tennis in them...I use the Asics Gel Resolution 7 for that, FYI. But these are easy to swop out for orthodic insert, and the short laces are great for avoiding potential tripping. Great support from heel through to the toe. You need not be a trail runner (or any runner) to get great use out of these! Note, the biggest difference between this and Gel Foundation is way more space in toe box on the Foundation at the same size ordered, and lighter material/shoe. Both are fantastic. But do NOT purchase either shoe unless you have a neutral or, ideally, a moderate to severe overpronation. Otherwise you'll probably write a scathing review as to how crappy these shoes are.

Won't disappoint
Asics make a great shoes. I'm not a runner, but work and walk around on concrete all day. They have always been very comfortable and my feet don't kill me at the end of the day. With that being said, I'll give my review on this particular pair. First of all they look great! I bought the Grey and red and they look fantastic. I've a always worn a 12 regular, but they did feel a bit snug when I put them on the first time. I was a little concerned, but after wearing over the weekend they seem to have broke in. These aren't running shoes, so they are a bit heavier than some of my previous asics. The cushion feels the same though, which is wonderful and the reason I keep coming back to them. Just keep in mind they won't feel as light. Construction is solid and definitely appear well built. I would recommend ordering wide, as others have suggested, because it's the only issue I can find, thus my 4star rating. I won't be returning mine, but if my foot was any wider I wouldn't have a choice. If you have owned a pair of asics these wont disappoint you. If you're reading this and trying to decide if you should give them a try, I hope this review was helpful. I personally love them, they just feel wonderful,!

Quality shoe. Upgraded from the last model
I actually had the same shoe for the last 3 or so years. Obviously they've updated the style a bit, but it lasted forever. I still have it but I just wanted something with a new cushion. This gray is perfect for someone who is active or does things outside a bit. The gray doesn't show the dirt and grit like a black, white, red show. It's very comfortable, fits as expected and is very light but durable. I have flat feet and the arch support is just a touch more than I'd like but I can almost never find something for a flat-footer. I'd buy again! I mean...I did already basically.

Just like my previous pair
I bought these to replace the pair I already have, which I really like, and these are exactly the same. Too bad Asics discontinued them. The shoe is stiff and offers some stability. They have good traction on dirt and on loose, decomposed granite. They also resist slipping sideways. These aren't for everyone and definitely aren't minimalist, but there is minimal drop from heel to toe. Unfortunately the great traction has cobtrubuted to some falls when running over rock outcropping and not picking up be my feet high enough. Like my Grandma used to say you live and learn.

Asics makes good shoes, and the Kehana doesn't disappoint. For a budget shoe, the Kehana is excellent for dry trails, light hiking, and even a casual night out on the town. The sandstorm color is particularly stylish and unique. I'm 5'10", 215 lbs, and active. I have wider E feet with fallen arches. I normally wear Asics Gel Kayano pavement runners, which are top tier for cushioning, comfort, and ventilation. These Kehana shoes are very comparable to the Kayano for cushioning and comfort, but the Kehanas are definitely NOT great for ventilation. (pro tip: if you have flat feet, consider replacing your insoles with Physix Gear Sport orthotic inserts; those inserts will improve the comfort and cushioning of any shoe!) Fitment: the Kehana is slightly wider than regular D-width in Canada, and toe box is roomy. The size 10 regular fits my 9.5E wide feet well. I think wide-footed people will like this shoe. Upper: the leather portion feels sturdy and secure. The acrylic webbing and tongue are also sturdy, but DO NOT BREATHE well. The synthetic tongue is also a bit abrasive, so going barefoot in these Kehanas may chafe the top of your foot. (I'll include comparative photos of my Gel Kayanos so you can see the ventilation surface area difference) Performance: the Kehanas feel light for a leather running shoe. They also feel secure for side-to-side movement, and I do not fear for rolling my ankle. The outsole tread is more toothy than the photos show, which makes the shoe good for climbing light hills. I have yet to try the Kehanas on steep inclines, wet pavement or snow/ice. Overall: for the $88 I paid for these shoes, I am very happy with them. I think they are excellent value for dog walking and light hiking around town. Just keep in mind that this is not a cool and breathable shoe, so if this will be your primary daily walker, you'll want wicking socks and foot powder!

All shoes I buy lately I have had to move up to a size 11 New Balance , Scarpa Merrel etc The Asics are still a generous fit and i probably should of ordered 10 or 10.5 but with thick socks they are fine .
