A Wonderful Film in Any Age of Man
As an Englishman, I love my Ilford film but I also love this venerable US maker's classic film and it is my first choice at 400ASAIlford's HP5 is an excellent material. However, I find it just too contrasty at times, especially in bright light.Tri-X to me is just different - it's greyscale is more graduated, gentle, tonal transitions are depicted with more delineation and therefore pictures look more detailed even under harsh and contrasty conditions. It is like a faster version of Ilford's FP4 and has that vintage look that Ilford's Delta 400 just does not have.It is so easy to work with and very reliable. My only gripe is that it is getting harder in the UK to find the 24 exposure version and of course the price continues to climb.Kodak got it right with Tri-X, they really did. It is a film that has captured much of human history around the world and is also worthy of capturing your personal histories too.Long may it continue.
