The Nupla 89714 Handi-Hammer is a heavy-duty, handleless dead blow hammer designed for larger hands. It features a non-marring soft and steel face, making it perfect for driving pins, rods, and pistons without damaging surfaces. Still made in USA and very useful in confined spaces.
First off, what a useful tool this is. Even 100% American made as well. If you are in a very confined space and as a example under a sink trying to remove a garbage disposal, this is quite useful to have. Granted this won't replace a "traditional" hammer nor is this intended to do that. If used in the proper fashion, this will be quite the useful tool when needed.

Useful Hammer
I needed a compact hammer (without a handle) to keep in my gun range and cleaning bag to either make sight adjustments or aid in the removal/insertion of pins. When I first received it it was slightly larger than what I had expected but should be adequate for any job. The material the hammer is made with makes it comfortable to hold. The hammer obviously gets it's weight from some type of filling that sounds like sand that shifts within the interior of the hammer because it is not full. I knocked off a star due to this trait, just my personal preference in quality. Recommended.EDIT: Due to the additional comment made concerning my post I presume the hammer is designed correctly, being filled only partially with whatever filling is used. So I'll give it the full five stars as I don't want to ding something inappropriately if that is how it is designed.

Made in U.S.A.
Nice and handy to have a handle less dead blow hammer. Could be made better though. The metal striking cap end comes to a conical point in the center of face. Needs to be a flat striking face LIKE A HAMMER SHOULD BE!The end of hammer is simply cap of nupla plastic. Wavy in shape, NOT FLAT!You'd think nupla would've bonded a flat non marring strike face like on their other hammers.Probably won't purchase again unless nupla suddenly remembers how to make a hammer again.Good ideal, excuted poorly.

Beware if Using It for Jewelry
Note that this review is only on it's use as a jewelry hammer, used on the plastic end to work-harden metal, and the hammer end to flatten metal.I bought it thinking I'd have better control from the hammer when working on jewelry, and it certainly does just that! The hammer works with you and make the process of flattening or hardening easier and a bit faster. I loved it, and wish I could continue using it, but there are two downsides. First, and minor enough that you could manage to work around it, is that both ends are a little concave - usually a really good thing, but they also come to a raised point in the center. It's mild, and easy enough to avoid marring your metal when flattening. That same point on the plastic side isn't such a big deal, since it doesn't make an impression anyhow. But the second flaw - for jewelry purposes at least - is that there's some sort of coating on the metal side which transfers to whatever you're hammering. The plastic side either picks up that coating from working the same piece or has it's own that serves to further tarnish the metal. For general purposes other than jewelry, I've no argument. This was just a reveiw on buying it for the purposes of jewelry making, which I would advise against.

Keep it in your car to break up ice bags.
I keep this in my car to break up ice bags (instead of having to drop them on the pavement). Takes up less room than a regular hammer. This is the larger of 2 models. Get this one; the smaller one is useless. This one says 14-oz on the side of the product. The Amazon description says 9" but the actual dimensions are 5.3" long x 1.8" diameter.

Limited uses but works great
As some have stated, not a million uses but handy for what you'd use it for, and it's cheap so why not?! I got it for the purpose of taking apart and re-assembling a few sets of those wire baker shelves and it worked perfectly for that. Better than a rubber mallet, and not as strong as a dead blow hammer. Plus lots of control since there is no handle.

Solid little one-hand dead blow hammer.
Like it as much as my other Nupla dead blow. This is great for those tight situations.
