TERRIFIC!
Bought (a couple) of these, along with the base unit and handsets for my friend's 93&94 year old parents (STILL living independently, and STILL with a better sense of humor, memory, and cognitive skills than most half their age!!!) They LOVE THIS WHOLE SYSTEM. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! And, important side benefit, my friend loves me for getting it for her parents!) The convenience of having it all integrated - the pendants, handsets, base unit with huge shortcut buttons for most impt or frequent calls (daughters, 911, motorcycle rental shop) is terrific. The one touch, 2-way feature of the pendant makes them feel more confident when, for example, entering/exiting bathtub (can you imagine? At 94! And the husband recently finished authoring a WWII book in time for his 93d birthday and is a heavy email & Google user!!! Wife wants a tablet! I want their stem cells!) Bottom line, seems terrific. Suggest considering buying more than one pendant, so always close at hand. Don't know detailed shortcomings as I don't use it - just studied the box, reviews, manual before buying it, but the users of it really love it.

Product I was sent was defective and may have been a return.
I purchased this setup for an elderly relative who lives 100 miles away. A few weeks passed before I could travel to her home and attempt an install. When I took the phone out of the box I noticed that the base was missing a button cover on the picture speed dial. After charging the handset and pendent, I discovered that the base refused to register the additional handset and safety pendent. I went through the manual several times and did all the troubleshooting options they offered but still no luck. I went to VTech's website and could find no help there. So I did leave an email message asking for assistance and I was told I would receive a reply in 2 working days. I'll have to let you know if their tech support is any good. In the mean time I guess I'll see if any other consumers have posted solutions for resetting the handset which I am hoping would solve the problem. I'm super frustrated with this phone. As I was looking through the packing materials I found evidence this phone has been repackaged before. I think I was sent a bad phone someone else had returned. I decided to return it to amazon but too much time has passed so I guess I am stuck with a defective phone and out $100. UPDATE: I received a reply from the company saying this: Thank you for contacting us. Based on your comments, if the SN6197 is purchase as a whole you don't need to register the handset from the base. However, if this is an accessory handset or pendant you need to register the handset or pendant on the base. Here's how: They gave me the same instructions from the book which I told them didn't work. The thing that upset me was that at the bottom of the email it said... Status: Resolved I replied to the email telling them that it most certainly was NOT resolved and a few other choice comments but I heard nothing back. I suppose I now have to go back to their website to communicate with them or something. ARRRGH. This is SOOO frustrating. Oh, and one more thing. In order to satisfy my original need I ordered a different model of this phone that had only the base and the emergency pendent. It arrived. I promptly unpacked it and sure enough it worked beautifully just as advertised. I guess this one is simply a lemon. Therefore, my advice is to open the package immediately and test the product. If it does not work as advertised return it for a replacement.

Beats the Life Alert monthly fee!
Wonderful resource. We cancelled LifeAlert for my elderly mom and now we use this instead. You can program two numbers into what my mom calls her 'phone necklace'. We have my cell number programmed onto the pendant and my brother also. 911 is #3 and only pre-programmed onto the corded phone. A couple of accidental calls to 911 made us take 911 off the pendant. Be aware: the pendant needs to be charged. Mom never remembers this. She's from a generation that doesn't charge things every night. I moved the charger to her bedside table and put a note on it to 'hang up the phone necklace here at night and put it back on in the morning.' If it's charged the pendant announces the caller by the name that comes up on Caller ID. But it talks while the phone is ringing which is distracting to a person in their 80s. Mom has a hard time doing two things at once, so when the phone rings she reaches for it, and then it starts talking while it's ringing and she gets distracted trying to figure out what's it's saying to her. Sometimes she even forgets to answer the pendant around her neck and walks over to the table phone. The buttons on the back of the pendant are marked 1 and 2. We used a small label (http://www.amazon.com/Brother-P-touch-Office-Labeler-PT-D200/dp/B007TN092K) to mark them with my name and my brother's in case she forgets the programming in an emergency. All in all a great item. We've had zero trouble with it. It was easy to set up and program, but obviously Mom wouldn't have been able to do that on her own. When we bought it it was twenty dollars more than it's selling for now and it was a bargain then. I recommend it for any person, not just the elderly, who needs assistance with phone calling. The pendant is such a brilliant idea. We would prefer to have more programmable phone numbers. You can only put 4 total on this corded phone, and the first 2 have to be the same as the pendant. Mom had many more numbers that were pre-programmed into her old (corded) home phone. We set the old phone up in another location so she can still use it if she needs to. We don't miss LifeAlert. The only thing LA had that this one doesn't is the emergency 'puck' she could carry with her. She never used it but it looked impressively useful. It was small beeper looking thing with a big red button supposedly programmed for 911, but it had no speaker or any way for her to talk to someone, just a button. Since we sent that back to LifeAlert we've made some of those custom labels for mom's jitterbug phone with simple instructions in case of emergency. She takes it with her now instead of the 'red button'. Highly recommended. If you have any questions I'll be happy to help.

Pendant is wonderful
I absolutely love this phone, especially the pendant. It is so convenient to be able to go about the house with the pendant around my neck and answer the phone with the touch of a button. No struggling with a handset or finding the cordless undercharged. It also gives that extra feeling of security because you can dial two preset numbers with the touch of a button should an emergency arise when you are not near the phone. Entire set works well. Great answering machine and cordless handset also. Great buy for the money. Saw the same set at a competitor for a higher price and it didn't include the cordless handset. I would definitely recommend this set. It would be especially helpful for the elderly or disabled who can't afford the monthly fee for an emergency pendant.

Best purchase for Mom
After reading several reviews and asking questions, I decided to buy this telephone for my elderly mother. This has been one of the best purchases I've made to help her transition into a new season of life. The configuration is perfect for her. It comes with a corded phone which serves as the base station, a cordless phone which offers mobility, and (my favorite item) a wearable pendant which is a small modified telephone that can be worn around the neck. As many other reviewers have written, the setup is simple and quick. The features I like the most are: 1. The first two speed dial numbers programmed in the corded phone are automatically assigned to numbers 1 & 2 on the pendant; 2. Volume control is easy to operate on all 3 devices; 3. Ability to easily disable the answering machine with a single switch - great feature if you have voicemail provided by your carrier; 4.The phones light up when they ring. My mom is slightly hard of hearing so the light is an added benefit. 5. Number and name announcement. We are exploring this feature, but I could almost swear I heard it announce my name (which is programmed in the phone's phone book along with my cellphone #) when I called my mom from another room in her house while testing the volume settings; 6. The menu button on the base unit makes it very easy to customize the features to best suit your needs; and 7. The pendant is phenomenal. This is my mother's favorite thing about the phone. Because she has fallen once and not been able to reach the phone quickly, she had resorted to putting one of her cordless phones in her pocket. She has a cellphone, but at her age, she isn't interested in owning or learning the newest technology. Therefore, her cellphone remains turned off and plugged into the charger. I spent about 30 minutes showing my mom how to answer the phone using the pendant, adjusting the volume, making a call using the 2 speed dial numbers, and attempting to use the voice command button on either side of the pendant. The only reason I didn't give this product a 5 star rating is because the voice command feature often did not recognize our pronunciation of words. This frustrated my mom to no end! We're from Texas and our dialect is probably peppered with a little southern drawl. The voice feature responded like we were speaking in a foreign language (admittedly, Texas English can be difficult to understand for non-southerners). Needless to say, we were unable to test or experience this awesome technology that the phone offered. My suggestion to the manufacturer would be to make the voice command feature more robust by allowing it to "learn" the user's dialect by having the user pronounce certain commands and adapting its response to the user. The pendant is very lightweight, but my mom did have a small complaint about it dangling around when she bends or walks. Her solution was to wear a shirt with a pocket. She puts the pendant around her neck and then in her shirt pocjet. One added surprise (and this is where I really applaud VTech for doing a small thing that has made a big difference for my mom), when the pendant is placed in the cradle to be recharged at the end if the day, it tells my mom 'Good Night'. When she removes the pendant from the cradle in the morning, it greets her with, 'Good Morning'. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting some assurance that a elderly loved one has easy access to a phone at all times. I think it's important to be realistic about the condition, both physically and mentally, of the person for whom you might purchase this item, but I find that it offers me and my mom a level of comfort and security we didn't always enjoy with her previous cordless phones.

Four stars plus. Love this set.
The VTech SNG197 CareLine is awesome. The pendant alone is worth the money. Anyone with a senior citizen with mobility problems, should consider this phone system. My husband has Parkinson's disease and can not always get to the phone in time to answer it. He has problems using his cell phone due to tremor and coordination problems. Now I put the pendant around his neck in the morning and he can answer calls from anywhere in the house. He can also utilize the two speed dial buttons programmed into the pendant to call out. The system announces the incoming calls which makes it easy for him to decide if he wants to receive the call or let it go to voice mail.He can also use the voice activation to dial either of the two programmed contacts. The answering machine on the main land line unit can be turned off with a push of a button if you have an answer service through your phone company provider. The four photo speed dial buttons are excellent for anyone that has memory or vision problems. Just be careful that you don't press one accidentally when using the easy to use selection buttons above.it. There is a audio assist button for those with hearing disability also included. All in all an amazing set. I ordered an extra hand held cordless set to complete our needs.

corded base works well and offers a lot of features, BUT...
The corded base phone is great and has a lot of nice features. It was easy to install and all features work well. Neither the pendant nor the cordless handset will register and do not work at all. I wanted a corded phone for power outages and so I may keep it and just toss the pendant and cordless extension. My old phone is cordless, so I can continue to use that. $24 a million years ago and still works great! Expensive mistake. Consumer Reports rated it highly, so I am kind of surprised that 2/3 of it doesn't work.

VTech SN6197 Careline Handset Landline Telephone - Good not perfect
I bought this telephone for my mother. This telephone is nice and clear, and good looking design, but not perfect yet. This phone does have some good features, and VTech does have room to improve this phone further. 1. This set came with 3 units, the base, handset and the pendant. The base and handset should have combine into one unit instead of separated into 2. Then, one less charge base for the handset, and one less power plug. 2. The base unit has 4 direct dial buttons, but the handset has none. The handset can not use any of the 4 programmed direct dial. 3. The phone-book and direct dial have no relationship. If you want the 4 direct dial to be part of the phone-book, you need to re-program those 4 names and numbers into the phone book again; you need to do it for the handset. Otherwise, handset does not have the data for those 4 numbers. It will be nice if the handset has the direct dial feature as well. 4. The answer machine on the base can only record up to 3 minutes max on each call, and 14 minutes max recording time total. They should not limited the max recording time for each call and the total recording time should be several minutes more like some other brands. 5. There are 2 side buttons on the pendant. These button's locations are so easy to activate. The buttons itself is very soft, so once you pickup the pendant by hand, the side buttons can be too easily pressed. 6. When I asked for the date from the pendant, the pendant says 2013 for this year even though the year is set to 2014. I believed only 2014 has this problem. I tried to set the year from 2012 to 2020. All other years responded correctly by the pendant except 2014. 7. The battery from the pendant can not be replaced, I don't know why they designed that way. 8. The delete button for the answer machine is too easy to delete all messages. If you press the delete button too quickly, you can easily double press the delete button which will delete all messages. 9. The voice recognition feature on the pendant only understand few English phases. If they design it be programmable to understand any language, then the pendant is more useful. My mother does not speak English very well. She can not use this feature at all. And worst of all, she always accidentally pressed the voice buttons on the side which caused her to be very confusing and uncomfortable. So far, we has used this phone for more than a week and we are thinking of returning it, even though I paid a good price of about $90 included tax. I like the phone design, but the problem I listed above did create problem for my mother.
