Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated!
I read "Chickens aren't the Only Ones" to my 3 daughters when they were young. How delightful to find another Heller book just as well written and illustrated!

Fantastic book!!
This is one of the MOST treasured books I read to my three children. I love Ruth Heller’s intelligence and the creative way she uses rhyme and language to educate children. Her illustrations are exceptional! This book should be in hardcover and available everywhere.

Was a bit disappointed.
I loved her books on camouflage and the book on egg-layers, but this book just was not up to the same standard. I kept thinking something had to be missing, but all the pages were there. I just felt that the rhymes were forced at times and did not flow well. Plus, though nourishing babies was mentioned and drawings of nursing baby animals were included, the book never actually mentioned milk or milk-production which is a key feature of mammals. The book also did not mention being warm blooded etc. I think the book tried to cover too much or perhaps had the wrong focus... the book tried to include all the types of mammals, characteristics of mammals, and live births... Maybe if it focused mainly on mammals and their shared characteristics (not live births though still including that topic), maybe it would have helped. I debated returning the book, but decided to keep it because the images are still lovely and I love the ending vi-vip-er-ous.

Animals Born Alive and Well
I used this book in a pair with Helen's Chicken's Aren't the Only Ones to study animals with my class. Both books were wonderful. Animals Born Alive and Well provided my students with vivid pictures of mammals. It also discussed the category of marsupials. The books are written so that children can learn these higher level skills. They provided an excellent springboard for discussion. I would suggest this book pair for any classroom studying animals.

my favorite book as a child
Awesome art, smart writing, and educational! I actually wanted to be a mammologist (someone who studies mammals), not just a zoologist, for a couple years in elementary school specifically because of this book. I still have my old hardback copy, but recently bought this for my nieces. Little did I know that the author was so prolific. Now I have tons of Ruth Heller books to buy for the kids.

Born alive and well
This is one of the most fun of Ruth Hellers books, we read it a lot. All of her books for us are great. My children enjoyed them all and now I read them to my granddaughter and she loves them. The rhyming, illustration is so beautiful and it really keeps my 9 month old granddaughters attention. Can't say enough great things about this author.

Very basic. Not greatly informative.
Very basic information, about how mammals can look so different from one another. Nothing particularly interesting, or presented in any interesting way. I expected more. I sent this back.
