1 9V battery like in smoke detectors.

Does it have a backlight?

The new ones with "Smart Glow" do, but unfortunately the manufacturer uses the same model number for the old and new ones: TAT-2000C.

I can not open the battery compartment to replace the battery. Any suggestions?

I just opened mine with no problem at all. You should be able to press on the three lines and slide it down easily.

Does this work on any part of the body that has an arterial pulse, ie the doral pedis artery of the foot? Or does it have to be at the forehead?

It will work on the Doral pedis artery. I have used it on other places besides the forehead and it works absolutely fine, you shouldn't have a problem
