Brilliant satnav that really helps.
We use both Garmin and TomTom in our cars, I like Garmin and my wife is used to TomTom. I bought her this one when her previous one broke and it is brilliant. Much more responsive with a great touch screen, the traffic updates are quicker than my Garmin. On one occasion driving up the M6 it showed slower traffic ahead, as we got closer it showed the delay reducing so I didn’t detour and arrived at the incident just after it had been cleared with the traffic flowing well. I’ll admit my Garmin couldn’t have done that, I’d have been on the detour! The magnetic mount works very well, the screen is very clear and easy to read. Most of the use is very intuitive, there are a couple of strange icons that show on the right hand travel bar and I haven’t been able to work them out or find out what they represent yet. Can’t help but recommend this to everyone, I may even have to get one for myself.

brilliant item, great to have live traffic, and lifetime map & camera updates
I do a 1.5 hour commute each way to work, and find this invaluable to avoid major problems on the road, just be sure to check your route time and listen to it! Bought this to replace the TomTom Go510 from 4 years ago, that was a good unit but got updates from phone via bluetooth, sometimes forgot to tether and suffered for it, also the unit was starting to glitch occasionally from being in the sun for extended periods. This new unit gets traffic updates via in-built SIM, so don't have to think about it. Camera, map updates etc are via wi-fi, I recommend doing these at end of day indoors as they can take surprisingly long to install. I initially mounted this to a TomTom adhesive mount disc, which worked well, but have since installed a Brodit PNA car mount (see picture) - this mount replaces the suction part of the TomTom mount, and screws onto a bracket purchased direct from Brodit that specifically fits your car model. It sits in front of the fan, keeping it cool or warm depending on weather, out of direct sunlight, and in easy reach, excellent.

This is an excellent SatNav
I had a TomTom o 6200, but stupidly left it on the windscreen during our extraordinarily hot summer and its innards got fried. It would still do routes, but not traffic. After getting stuck in some dreadful traffic jams I started looking for a replacement. This meets all of my needs. The voice recognition is OK but I find it won't work if the heater/aircon fan is blowing loudly and sometimes it seems to take great delight in misunderstanding me. Otherwise, thus far, it has worked brilliantly and, because I had a TomTom before, all my routes were transferred over WiFi without me having to do anything about reloading them. I am also very happy that I don't have to subscribe to any update sites - everything is updated automatically for the life of the machine. I am very pleased with this product.

A good product with just a few shortcomings ......
I have used tom-tom devices for more than 15 years for both navigating and for finding places on a map. So when the GO Premium came out, I decided to replace my old TT720. The new larger screen, the upgraded dashboard mount, the sleek and thin product and the fact, that you could use voice recognition, all swayed me towards buying this product. The inability to dim the previous TT 720 to a much darker screen then I would have preferred, has meant, that driving at night would mean that the screen would be blaring light into your eyes and you would soon get vision fatigue. The new Tom Tom GO has the ability to dim the screen much more. This means, that driving at night is much more pleasant experience and I truly cannot understand, how some people can drive with their phones set at maximum brightness at night. This is not only dangerous, but it also strains one's eyes to the point, that a longer journey will then become very tiresome. Display: The 6 inch screen of the GO Premium is very nice to use. I use glasses for reading, but as the display is very clear and the lettering on the screen is big enough, I can see the display clearly, without having to to reach for my glasses while driving. This makes using the Tom-Tom a much safer experience. Docking Station: The dashboard docking station is magnetic, so this means once you place your tom-tom close enough to the docking station, it will just click in place and stay put. The docking station is reasonably well designed, sturdy and is withstanding even some off-road activity. Saying this, it sometimes has difficulty staying fixed in place in hot weather. To combat the docking station falling off in hot weather, I sometimes release the ring which tensions the suction cup below it, in order to relieve the suction cup pressure for a period of time. This means, that when I get back into the car, I need to re-tighten the docking station fixing ring, in order for it to stay fixed. In my view, as these docking stations have gone through years and years of development, they could have been made much better. The failure of this docking station also stems from the fact, that it is unable to be mounted to any dashboard, which has a ripple surface. You must purchase one of those small, stick-on intermediary plates, glue that tho the dashboard and then the docking station is then fixed via the suction pad to this disk. Yet another "forced purchase." It is unbelievable, that on a product costing around £300, the company is STILL unable to include a well thought through docking station and one, that would initially work on any type of surface, including on today's dashboards. This is a fundamental failure of the design department. Features: Too many to list here. See TomTom website for details. Just some features below: Screen Dimming, Great lane Changing Display, Accident Alerts, Route Closure Alets, Faster Route rerouting, Points of Interest navigation, Alternative Route Finding and Display, and many more...... Use: The product is very easy and very nice to use. However here are some major failures: This Tom Tom has the ability to connect to the traffic monitoring system and therefore it will route you into areas with lesser congestion, or, it will navigate past areas where there has been an accident. This is all great, if it wouldn't be for the fact, that it takes ages to actually acquire the necessary data, in order for the navigation to actually start working. Once I get into my car, I would say that 30 or up to 45 seconds should be well enough, and, if I would be very lenient, maybe a minute could be enough for a product of this caliber to actually start navigating. Don't get me wrong, it is very easy for the tom-tom to acquire the GPS position, however, acquiring the other information it often needs takes an enormous amount of time, in order to navigate you in the correct direction. And if you happen to be in an area with weaker mobile coverage, the product may stop working altogether and will throw a fit, often displaying only a greyish screen. To me, this is a complete disaster and on some occasions I was even forced to make an inconvenient stop in order to wait for the product to catch up and to start displaying the desired route. I am very technically minded, and in my view, this lack of speed of the product points squarely to a cheaper and less powerful processor, which, for this price bracket, could have been much better. Once the product does however have a signal and once it has all the necessary information, it is a subsequently a joy to use. It navigates with ease, reroutes your journeys around obstacles and/or around any accidents and has a fantastic way to show you, which lanes you need to use on the motorway, prior to you making an exit. Maps: The fact that you get an unlimited worldwide map update with this product is also a bonus. This will mean, that traveling to different countries is no longer an issue, as you can download various maps directly to your device and therefore do not have to rely on either Internet, phone signal or any other mapping systems in order to get you to your destination. Tom-Tom calls this map update system a "lifetime subscription", but it is really up to Tom Tom, to define what exactly the "lifetime" means. Unfortunately for the user, it means the lifetime of the product CYCLE and not the lifetime of the individual product in service. Confused? So was I. So what this means, is that in say eight years, Tom Tom may well decide to no longer support this particular product, as it will come up with new products and new features. So really, the "lifetime" subscription to the maps is a bit of a white lie. Conclusion: I have used various navigation devices before and so, have had the chance to use products from different companies. Tom Tom was one of the first ones to use the great lane changing features and it had many other features, which the competition was later just copying. I even tried using Google apps sometimes although I hated it, but it seemed, that Tom Tom has always found a better route and it was always easier and more pleasant to use. So, would I recommend you buy yourself one of these? Well, YES. Of course there are now many devices and many companies vying for your money and for your attention. But the fact still stands, that even Apple uses TomTom's own data, to improve their Apple Maps and that says to me, that TomTom still has something, which others do not possess. And it shows. Yes, there are some design oversights, yes, there are the some glitches, but ultimately, if you are in need of a generally reliable and well enough designed product, you can't go wrong with this, or many other TomTom devices.

The Best SatNav
My fourth upgrade with TomTom. The Traffic reporting is excellent. Ok it gets it wrong very occasionally but it has saved me an age in time and frustration over the years. Far better than any inbuilt car system.

Update December 2019. Update July 2020 (DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE)
On first view the TomTom Go premium looks very much like the previous 6200 model with a few software tweaks. The device is very easy to setup out of the box and the 6 inch screen is clear and easy to see in most light conditions. The automatic colour change to night view only changes when it is almost dark and I have been blinded by the glare of the device on several occasions in poor light conditions causing me to stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn the device off. The previous model suffered from an irreversible problem if the day and night colours were changed manually. I experienced this myself and changed the setting manually only to discover that the device was then stuck in day mode. This problem is well documented on the internet with no solution at the time of writing this review. Planning the route via the My Drive app on a phone, tablet, or computer is a good feature and works well. Updating the device via Wi-Fi also works well so long as your Wi-Fi signal is good. My signal was average in the garage so I installed a Apple AirPort Express to boost the signal and updates, depending on size, take just a few minutes to complete. The twist grip suction mount is very robust and the best I have ever used. The power cable attaches to the base of the mount, not the device, so the device simply attaches/detaches with ease. The navigation, live traffic reports and speed camera locations are quite accurate but a few have disappeared since the latest update. The speed limit and current speed is displayed on the screen and the sidebar is very informative. Navigating the on screen menu and settings is very slow and the display regularly freezes and closes down. The voice control is also unreliable, just like the previous 6200 model. I owned the previous 6200 for just a few weeks and ended up returning the device due to a number of problems. The IFTTT for syncing home devices is a nice feature but the security leaves a lot to be desired and not very robust. If the device is stolen then the perpetrator will have full access to your saved routes including home location so they can open your garage door, if you have automation, and any other home device linked to the device. I won't be syncing my garage door opener, thermostat, ETC. to the device anytime soon. TomTom customer/technical support via email or phone is at best useless and a complete waste of time. I have contacted them by phone and email and they lack any understanding and always respond with a scripted answer. I have provided lots of critical feedback but see no improvement. In summary, my experience of using TomTom products over several years, including a device that is built into my other car, is that they manufacture some good products but are always let down by software niggles that they never sort out and of course the very worst Customer/technical support. Update. 2 week review. I've been using the device on a daily basis several times a day for the past 2 weeks and in all honesty wouldn't recommend this device at this price point considering all of the niggles and security issue of the IFTTT. The good points are: * Live traffic information is satisfactory but route traffic delays are slow to clear * Route download from My Drive app to device works well * Route accuracy is good on the routes that I've used * Speed camera locations satisfactory but some are missing on the routes I've been using * Device takes just a few seconds to wake when starting the car The not so good points are: * Voice command is useless. It randomly stops working, restart required to reactivate, and it has now started to activate itself from the radio playing in the background * Minor updates every 2-3 days which are becoming annoying and time consuming to install * Last major update of European maps took 5 hours in total. The device kept shutting down part way through the update although it was connected to power and had a good Wi-Fi signal * Milage discrepancy of around 20-30% between route on My Drive app and the device itself * Randomly shuts down and restarts part way through journey * Screen locks up and goes black. Restart required to reactivate ** Screen doesn't switch to night colours until it is actually dark And finally, the most annoying issue is the device is so slow to navigate the menu. 2-3 seconds delay between each input and It takes an age to tab through the settings. ** A solution to the screen not switching to night colours until dark is to fit a FoliX privacy filter. The filter is available from Amazon and is easy to install. It also prevents the sat nav screen reflecting, depending on position, onto the windscreen and side windows. The previous model, Go 6200, is now around 3 years old and this new Go premium has inherited all of the faults of the previous model. Clearly, TomTom much prefer to add the likes of IFTTT, ETC., and give it a new name rather than fix the many issues that would otherwise make this a very good device worthy of a 4-5 star rating. That's assuming they also address the terrible customer/technical support. You will see that Tom Tom have responded to my initial review and remarks about Customer/technical support. They haven't fully read or understood my review because I made it clear that I have no confidence in the security of the IFTTT function and won't be using it. UPDATE December 2019 Part way through a journey the device shutdown and wouldn't restart. It came back to life a few days later but had lost all of its maps. I spent a week trying to reload the maps, as per TomTom support, but the device kept shutting down and restarting and wouldn't load the maps. I eventually gave up with TomTom and complained to Amazon who quickly sent me a returns label. I have had the replacement for the past 3 months and although it hasn't lost any of the maps it still suffers from all of the problems of the original device that I've listed below. * Voice command is useless. Restart required to reactivate * Screen doesn't switch to night colours until it is actually dark I have also experienced lots of issues with inaccurate live traffic information that advises me to divert to avoid delays on my route. I've lost track of the time I've wasted, not to mention the additional fuel and wear and tare on my vehicle. I now cross check my routes prior to setting off and ignore any divert. My advice to anyone considering purchasing the TomTom Premium is, don't bother. That said, if you do go ahead I strongly recommend you purchase from Amazon (sold and supplied). Amazon customer support is first class and they will look after you if you need to make a warranty claim. UPDATE July 2020 The device turned off midway through a route and it won’t turn on. I have followed the online help guide but the reset function doesn’t work. The device is completely dead. I have sent 4 emails to TomTom and have also tried to call them but there is no answer. Amazon are also not responding to my emails. My contract is with Amazon and they must offer a repair/replacement or refund but they have now blocked their email enquires and all correspondence gets bounced back. My advice is to think very carefully about purchasing any item of value until they get their support working. Check out the reviews on Trust pilot for TomTom before purchasing.

Patience when downloading
TomTom GO Premium saw no issues. Set up was easy. Admit that downloading to update was slow, but I have had this experience with other models of TomToms. It just calls for patience. Just put it to one side and leave it to download updates, may take 1 to 2 hrs. I cannot fault the device as yet. I bought the 7-inch screen version; it’s clear in detail bright. I would recommend it. Pricey but worth it.

My favourite model
I been using same model from long time. Tomtom has discontinued this model because it was with free life time maps and camera updates. Indeed, it is not acceptable by Tomtom that people don't enjoy free service, rather they prefer people should pay every year. To sum up, Tomtom is a good product and I still feel comfortable using Tomtom rather than mobile maps but on the other side, Tomtom customer service is horrible and terrible. Do not expect good CS from Tomtom but navigation is very good especially very helpful if it is live
