G.I. Joe: Resolute

Not The G.I. Joe Of Your Youth, But The G.I. Joe Of Your Makebelieve
My review is gonna be based on a previous purchase of this dvd. I had this DVD about four years ago, but it wound up as a casualty of a cross country move. While I was able to bring my entire G.I.Joe toy collection, safe and sound, my dvd collection was lost. So I'm piecing together what I had ordered from Amazon, previously. Unfortunately the G.I.Joe Resolute dvd I ordered a few days ago arrived with a loose disc and scuffing on the laser side, so I had to request a replacement. Fortunately I know Amazon to be good at situations like this, and I know I'll be watching this short film again soon. I'm making this review based on my memory of the previously owned copy.Firstly with this G.I.Joe film, you will notice that the animation is very good. It's similar to the Young Justice show, or DC animation original films like Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths. Everything is shaded, and animated with a bit of an edge. Speaking of edge, the second thing you'll notice is the drop dead seriousness of the vibe of it. What I mean by that is this isn't your classic G.I.Joe show, where the music was bright and colorful, where the atmosphere and interaction between the characters were light hearted and slightly comical. The comparison I would make is the original Christopher Reeve Superman film versus Henry Cavill's Man Of Steel film. There are moments when I thought, why is everyone walking around with furrowed eyebrows and dead serious tones, ALL THROUGH THE 58 MINUTE FILM? I think the only smile I could recall was Gung Ho when he cracked a wry quip at the films Dialtone, which isn't the Dialtone you might remember from the 80's. All the changes are fine ones, except the ridiculously serious tone, and that's thanks to the writers, producers, director . . . and the FANS. Somewhere along the line, the fans developed this apologetic embarrassment towards their childhood Joes, and started to show off their Larry Hama comics by Marvel as what G.I.Joe SHOULD BE. Forgetting that they were still referring to COMIC BOOKS that inspired the tv show, awkward jokes and cheesy over the top, unplausible action and situations, to boot. Cobra was also the enemy, with all the fantasy/sci-fi elements included. The makers and headliners of Resolute discuss this in their creator interview included on this disc, and one of them even references how he would play with his G.I.Joe toys as a kid. He goes so far as to say that he played with them "more seriously", as if to impress the beautiful Hasbro representative who is interviewing these three jokers. The story is a simple one, that utilizes at least one third of the entire Joe roster presented, while the other two thirds are left in the background. Lady Jaye is only seen once in the background pan shot of the entire roster, and then once more during a briefing. Both times she's silent, and her Airborne cap is pulled down over her eyes . . . she says nothing and is reduced to be a silent pair of lips and tufts of hair spreading outward from the cap. You never see her eyes, and she felt like a stationary mannequin to me. The only other two lady Joes in the show are Dialtone and Scarlett. The former being young and tenacious, and the latter and more familiar Joe, Scarlett, is growly and hellacious. Her introductory scene was a prime example of the attitude of this production, full of sideways glances and warface expressions. When she pulls her crime scene investigation disguise off, the hat comes off to allow her hair to fall into her face, revealing her death glare frown underneath, and she then walks at the screen while staring into your soul like Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear . . . it's an expression that would make Batman proud. Duke, who always reminded me of actors like Kurt Russell, or Tom Selleck from Magnum P.I, comes off again, like a growly CSI actor. There's a contentious moment between Snake Eyes (who's the only character who feels like a classic interpretation . . . and he says not one word), Duke, and Scarlett where an ultimatum is kinda made, making reference to the fan opinions of "who should have Scarlett?" Fortunately Scarlett makes it clear that she's about the mission and team, and not playground ownership. Another contentious moment happens when Duke and Scarlett are about to be airdropped over an abandoned base, preparing to engage Cobra troops and weaponry. While preparing, Ripcord is re-iterating the battle plan, and seemingly the voice work is appropriately loud because they have to speak to each other over the loud hum of the cargo plane, until the aforementioned moment of unneeded drama happens, and it goes something like this:DUKE: "You remember your orders?"RIPCHORD: "Yeah . . . drop you two over the target, circle around for 10 minutes, and if I don't hear any word back from you, turn around and head back to base!"SCARLETT: "YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIKE IT!!"RIPCHORD: "GOOD! I WON'T!!!". . . What happened to all the fun and witty bantering between these longtime Joe team members?! It's been replaced with HOSTILE and JUVENILE retorts full of bileful snaps at one another. I get the situation was declared SERIOUS during the briefing at the beginning, complete with "once again the world is in peril" statements, but SHEESH! Can these friends and trusted teammates ACT like friends and trusted teammates?! It's like this show was written by teenagers who grew up thinking that life is a TV soap opera. If this Resolute animatoon were done with the animation it has but touched up by the original show writers, and acted by as many of the original actors from the 80's, which would include everyone besides Arthur Burghart and Chris Latta, who are DEAD, it would have more than SERIOUSNESS . . . it might include some laughs as well as action. And now that I think of it, some CHARACTER. When The Baroness and Destro enter the show, those looking for that german sound from The Baroness will find that she's now Czechoslovakian. The actor who plays Destro does his best to mix Sean Connery and the original Destro actor Arthur Burghart. Its O-KAY. I also miss Bill Ratner as Flint, about as much as I miss Michael Bell as Duke. Bill Ratner always sounded like Powers Booth or James Coburn. Awesome. Here Flint sounds like Billy Baldwin, just too blankety instead of bouldery. The voice work is just adequate, but always serious. Like everything else in the show . . . "WHY so SERIOUS?"Resolute is played off like a sequel to the original series, possibly all the previous shows, but it comes off like an argument between a superhero sidekick and his mentor, just butting heads over who calls the shots. The previous shows just had fun and made good entertainment . . . but now that I've gotten all the contentious points of the film out of the way, I can cover the good stuff. The animation is great and crisp, the action is well done, even more so than the Rise Of Cobra movie, and people who enjoyed the "ninja changes" to Snake Eyes, will get their buffet of ninja badassery with this show. That's what this show does best, because the aforementioned childish showrunners also brought all their cool ideas from their youth. We all remember when we had those little brilliant moments while playing G.I. Joe in the backyard with our friends. If you read this far into the review despite my long winded rants about what could have been different, you must've dug mini-fox holes, and buried your Joes when they died in battle, so surely you KNOW what I'm talking about. That moment where the Roadblock in our toydays jumped into the Whirlwind cannon and spun it around to shoot an emergency blast at a H.I.S.S. Tank that was about to wipe out his team, but managed to blast it off a cliff because the bolster rails were facing the other way. You might remember the Lady Jaye and Flint of your youth dueling it out against Storm Shadow on a helipad, being hopelessly outmatched, but fighting on until one them falls at the sword. You might even remember ol' Sgt. Slaughter and Stalker training some grunts who resembled some ragtag platoon that was reminiscent of something out of the Harold Ramis film STRIPES. All these moments of brilliance that a kid could have are kind of represented in this film. Hell, this series and toylines were so crucial to 80's youth that even Quentin Tarantino claimed that he played with G.I. Joe figures and toys when he was a kid, swearing language and all. While it may be a bit ridiculous in tone, those moments of brilliance do shine in the situations and action of this DVD. It's a mixed bag, but a welcome one in the pantheon of the G.I. Joe product we have all collected. I would recommend this Resolute dvd wholeheartedly, and once you've seen it, feel free to go grab your toys out of the storage closet and have a round of make believe.

Best GI Joe cartoon by far but not accurate
GI Joe Resolute, oddly enough debuted the same year as the motion picture movie GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. My brother and I were extreme fans of GI Joe in the 80s as we collected EVERYTHING GI Joe then. This cartoon is by far the best cartoon adaptation, as the regular series was totally not accurate (Remember Lifeline was an extreme pacifist in the cartoon, but the toy came with a HUGE pistol, vehicles in the cartoon could fit large numbers of characters in them, etc.)This cartoon series is directed to the older audience who enjoyed watching the 80s cartoon series, or reading the comics, or playing with the toys. There is violence in this cartoon, much more than the 80s GI Joe The Movie (remember that 1.5 hour cartoon in the 80s?). There are some of the good guys who actually dies in Resolute, but I they are not any of the main characters (Joes with no codename with the exception of one individual, Bazooka).Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow face off in Resolute, probably the most favored of all GI Joe characters. I remember playing with my friends in elementary school and we would fight and argue with each other on who could be Snake Eyes! He was one of the few GI Joe figures that had several versions. The comic series had some intense ninja action between these two individuals, and now you get to enjoy some of that type of action in this cartoon! Now the bads....... there were some inaccuracies that made me give this review 4 out of 5 stars.1. Dial Tone was supposed to be a guy, not a girl! I actually had this figure and he had a huge backpack thingy. Resolute creators chose to give this girl the codename Dial Tone, as they said this character had enough dialogue to warrant her having a real Joe codename.2. Ripcord was supposed to be a caucasian person. I think he looked African-American (same as the motion picture movie, which I was sad to see). I too, owned this figure in the 80s.3. Snake Eyes lost his ability to speak..... not from Zartan the sniper (in Resolute), but he actually lost his ability to speak (and got his face massively disfigured) by a helicopter accident, as noted in the comic book series in the 80s.Aside from the errors, I hope the creators will create more of the cartoon series (as the 80s cartoon had a lot more errors and the quality of the drawings was not there). It is the same with the Transformers franchise in the 80s. The Transformers the movie(80s movie cartoon) had superior animation/quality of drawings versus the regular cartoon series.Should you buy this DVD? If you grew up with the toy line in the 80s/early 90s, read the comic series in the 80s, or watched the 80s cartoon series........ then YES, you should definately buy this DVD.

The GI Joe we've been waiting for!
I grew up watching the original GI Joe cartoon. It was part of my formative years and I started purchasing the DVD collections when they were recently re-released and it definitely holds a special place in my heart. The issue that I run into now is "Wow, this is pretty cheesy". GI Joe : Resolute is what I (as a 35 year old boy) have wanted to see : a more adult version of one of my beloved childhood cartoons. The gloves are most definitely off in this DVD.This is definitely not for children. In the first 5 minutes, we see actual death as one of the classic Cobra characters shows up dead and Cobra Commander (in a much less whiny role) commits mass murder on a scale never before seen in GI Joe, or any other cartoon for that matter.Fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable, I can watch this over and over again and I lend it to friends who always rave about it on returning the DVD.

DVD Zone 1

Dimenticabile.Sottotitoli in inglese e spagnolo.

Well made for the grown up fans of the classic 80’s series.
Great movie for any grownups who liked GIJOE- a real American hero when they were kids. Definitely made with care and affection for the classic 80’s series. Heavy focus on snake eyes and storm shadow, but that’s not a bad thing! Very enjoyable and you can’t beat the price!
