Modeling Volcanic Processes: The Physics and Mathematics of Volcanism New Edition

Its the most comprehensive book yet. A lot of work went in to this and it shows! I look forward to reading thw whole thing, but the chapter I needed asap has already paid off the price of the book. :)

I received acceptance offers for graduate school from a number of the authors in this book and turned them down (also accepted one acceptance then later quit his group in part because of his reckless approach to research). This book is a bit of a demonstration why. The authors focus too much on the quantitative, loosing site of the physical and field fundamentals including good field technique. The authors apply mathematics without considering the petrology of the rocks and its intricate nature. As petrology controls many of the physical properties of rocks that the authors treat as variables, it came across as narrow-minded with lots of room for errors as it does not take into account the physical characteristics of the rocks being erupted and that form the deposits on which new material is erupted.
