How to Teach English Book and DVD Pack

An excellent introduction to teaching English. Not the most in-depth but that may be one of its advantages
I am very impressed with this book but when I was ordering it, I could not determine the difference between this and Jeremy Harmer's other comprehensive title, "The Practice of English Language Teaching." I ended up purchasing both and I suggest that you do the same. This book is an excellent introduction to the broad scope of topics and is well organized, with lots of practical ideas. It includes concept checking reviews (like those you will use with your students?) and an interesting and useful DVD component. However, if you prefer a more thorough, in-depth view, you will prever "The Practice of English Language Teaching" or the comparable text by Jim Scrivener, "Learning Teaching." I myself am working my way through this book ("How to Teach English") and looking forward to proceeding to the other two. I am hoping that between the three books, and a good grammar review, I will be ready to take a CELTA/TESOL intensive class.

CELTA handbook
I used this book for my month long intensive CELTA course. It is full of a lot of really great information to the CELTA methodology of teaching English as a foreign language. It helped prepare me before the course, and was a really good aide during the course for my assignments. Jeremy Harmer gives a lot of really good advice in this book, and in his others. I definitely recommend getting this book if you are about to start the CELTA course and want to prepare what you're getting into.

Clear and Practical Guide for Teaching English – Great for Beginners!
How to Teach English provides a well-organized overview of key topics in English teaching, making it an excellent resource for new teachers or those looking to refresh their skills. The book covers a wide range of subjects, from lesson planning to classroom management, with clear explanations and practical suggestions that can be applied directly to teaching. It’s filled with helpful ideas that are easy to implement, which is great for building confidence in the classroom. However, if you’re seeking a more comprehensive, in-depth analysis of language teaching methodologies, a more specialized book might be better suited. Overall, this is a solid foundational book that’s both accessible and insightful.

Helped sooth my nerves about being a first-time ESL teacher
Although there wasn't much directly useful to my situation (Public middle school in Korea. I have classes of nearly 40 students and see each class once per week), the book helped me get an idea of what my role was going to be and what I needed to do in order to prepare. I have even been able to adapt a few of the activity ideas into my monster-sized classes. Personally, I would like to see a longer discussion about having large class sizes, and strategies for dealing with them, but obviously no one can write a book perfectly catered to everyone.

Ph.D Foreign Language Education
Well written. Summarizes in easy to understand language what took me 2 years of masters level classes (on foreign language education) to complete. I use it to teach undergrads who want to go abroad and teach English. The examples are well done and students respond well to the DVD. The lesson planning is confusing, but otherwise I recommend it for training language teachers or for self study if you're planning to teach overseas. It doesn't bother me that it's not American English.

Shipped on time, excellent condition
The headline says it all. Shipped a couple days after I ordered. Arrived two weeks later, within the shipping window. Though it is used, the book is in excellent condition. A few markings from a previous owner, library stamp, doesn't hinder the readability. Exactly what I need. Would recommend this seller for your used book go-to.

TESOL want to be teachers
This book is basic. It has good points about teaching English but is not the complete book many of us are using for TESL / TESOL certification. Suggest reading other books on your own if you are serious about teaching abroad. In regards to the physical properties of this book beware. Apparently there are 2 different publications of this book. One book is slightly larger than the other (the same book however). The larger of the two publishing's has larger print and does not fall apart as it's small version does. The smaller version (in overall physical size) has smaller print and unfortunately does not stay together. The problem is in the binding, it breaks apart easily.I purchased this book from Amazon and was sent the smaller version. It fell apart in 2 days. I received a replacement a couple weeks later and with tender loving care it is still in tact but is starting to break apart again after only 4 weeks of use. My fellow class mates who have the larger version are not experiencing problems like those of us who got "stuck" with being shipped the smaller publication of the book!As a suggestion to anyone who is planning to purchase this book check the publishing out first. And by all means request the latest production; the larger version otherwise you may be having to deal with multiple replacements.

A Gift for a Friend
I purchased this as a going away gift for a friend and have not used it myself. She was leaving to go to school in how to teach ESL overseas. We ordered it at the last minute when we discovered that it is the only one recommended by the school she was attending in Thailand. That itself is a pretty good recommendation.
