We use these every year. If my child is going into 1st grade, we will get him the 2nd to 3rd grade book. We do not use the K to first-grade book. These books have really helped my children prepare for the upcoming year, especially the math sections. We keep to the schedule of only one page a day (front and back). Yes, your child may not fully comprehend some stuff because it is for the upcoming year, but it is not hard for a parent to spend just about 5 minutes explaining the concept. Both my sons have used this company, and the following school year, they are not surprised by the upcoming materials, again especially the upcoming math. The book comes with star stickers to reward the kids....we never used them. The book also has outdoor activities for the kids to get "some" exercise for the day. It is nothing big, for instance, for little kids, "go outside and count the different types of trees you see from your front yard." The book primarily consists of language and math, but it also includes sections that cover geology, history, and other subjects. The non-English and math sections are mini-lessons and there are only about one per topic. Bottom line, these books are mostly reading/English and math exercises.

This is the perfect activity/ school book for summer. It only takes my kid about 10 mins to do every weekday and it will help with the coming school year.

My daughter is very smart but has fallen ever so slightly behind in math, so I got her this workbook mostly for the math practice, but thought it'd be more palatable with other subjects thrown in. I only have her part time, so I figured we'd do more than one lesson a day. Some cons: - So far, lessons are taking us WAY more than 15 minutes. They are very advanced and require a lot of background knowledge, some of which she does not have. For example, in the first day's math lesson she needed long division, long multiplication, order of operations, dividing fractions, and decimals. - Need additional materials - We are two days in and lessons have asked for a dictionary and atlas. We do have a dictionary, but not an atlas, and it's taken a lot of me searching to find the right types of maps on the internet. - Flashcards are random. I think of flashcards as foundational knowledge that needs to be drilled and memorized (math facts, for instance). These flashcards are just math and word problems, and thus no more useful than the worksheets, though I suppose some kids might like the different format. Pros: - Like having it divided by day, even if it's taking 1.5 hours instead of 15 minutes. - Enjoy the mix of activities so it's not too much drilling of one thing and lets her have easier and harder lessons

It appears to be a good summer review book with a lot of online support resources. There are even online math and reading comprehension downloadable books that can be used in conjunction with the workbook if I feel 1 page a day isn't enough. There is easily 2 hours of work a day during the summer if I choose. I also like that it has references to online support in regards to grammar and social sciences. There were learning games apps available for the higher grades for summer bridge workbooks but now, no more. Kids are so accustomed to technology, it would have been nice to download an app for my son's iPod so he could practice in the car or wherever. Overall, it looks like a good summer review book.
