Q: does it have removable plates? I am looking for a sandwich maker that will not set my kitchen on fire, will not melt, will not fuse the house etc..

The plates are not removable but I've had no issues with it over heating in a commercial kitchen.

Q: Can it be stored vertically?

Yes, I store our aigostar vertically every time! The cable is at the rear so not a problem!
