ALL HAIL EMPEROR PENGUIN!
Totally glad I purchased this! I know the story is older and from when DC Comics was still in The New 52! but, it was still great! Loved the story & artwork, I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it! Highly recommended to all!

Best volume yet
Just finished Emperor Penguin. Great read. Art was great an the story was top notch. I really digged the character Emperor Penguin. Also liked the backup an flash backs involving him. Set it up nice. Merry maker had an intesting design, looks like one of them doctors during the plague with the bird mask. Good volume has me excited for volume 4.

John Layman of Chew Takes Over a Flagship Line
Batman Detective Comics, Vol. 3: Emperor Penguin is something I've been waiting for a long time, the mainstream debut of John Layman. Layman rose to fame in the comic-book world as the author of Chew, and he's no less adept at mysteries as he is at comedies. Most of this collection centers around the two Penguins, Oswald Cobblepot - the original Penguin - and Ignatius Ogilvy - Emperor Penguin.I guess I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was at how good this collection is. Layman's Chew does center around law enforcement. I'm such a big fan of Chew that I read the first two volumes of Detective Comics despite lackluster reviews and the lack of Layman's involvement. The artwork was always very good, and I did like some of the stories by Tony Daniels, but the writing was uneven. Not so with John Layman. He's truly turning into one of the best comic-book writers in America, and I don't think it's premature to mention him in the same breath as Jonathan Hickman and Geoff Johns. ****3/4

One of the best for my opinion.
Damn... Amazing artwork, and a story that bounces back and forth. A must have must read must must must.

Good read. I can’t wait to continue the series.
Go Batman go. Beating up thugs and keeping Gotham clean. Always be Batman and keep reading. Love me some detective series.

Okay, but disjointed storytelling.
This collection is better that the “Joker - death in a family” collection from the new 52, but is still disjointed and lacks a cohesive story. Also, the extras repeat parts from other collections. I didn’t love it, but I liked it enough in order to give it 3 stars. Some good art and some decent plot lines. Just a little jumbled.

Another good entry in the new Batman mythos
The Batman Detective Comics series of the new 52 has been solid so far but nothing special, this volume with a new creative team behind it really gives the title a boost. The series highlights the detective aspect of the Batman universe, following the Batman investigating and piecing the puzzles together. Although this volume crosses over with the 'Death of the Family' event, unlike over series it's not overtaken by it.We see the Batman combating the surge in Joker inspired gangs after the return of his arch nemesis, investing a series of murders committed by one particular group that may have something more to them than meets the eye. The writing is tight and the narrative very enjoyable. The 2nd tale in here shows see the penguin dragged into the Jokers grand schemes, leaving his 2nd in command to run the criminal empire which has more ramifications that you might expect to the ongoing Gotham story. This volumes brings the quality of the series much closer to the excellent Scott Snyder Batman series and I'm very much looking forward to the next book.
