A solid chemistry textbook, but be aware of some caveats
Last year, I purchased this book along with ' Advanced Physics '. I have previously reviewed the physics book, and I feel that after using this book to help me with my AS studies, I could give a more detailed insight in to the textbook. The previous edition of this book was very highly rated on Amazon, and this was one of the contributing factors in to my purchase; I am glad to say that many of the points from these reviews still stand true, but there are some points to note.To start off with the good points, there is a huge breadth of content in this textbook. The layout and content is respectively clear and concise with each topic appearing on a double spread. As with the 'Advanced Physics' textbook, you can truly learn and understand chemistry from this textbook, and it is excellent for 'reading around the subject', which seems to be a rather overused phase often said by teachers. An example is the spread on solving the Schrödinger equation on page 54 - clearly not a topic covered at A-Level, but rather something to read, and hopefully enjoy.I personally find it to be an excellent combination along with Edexcel textbooks by Hill & Hunt ( Edexcel Chemistry for AS & Edexcel Chemistry for A2 ), the standard issue text at my 6th form. One textbook may explain a concept in a much more understandable fashion than the other, and the redundancy in having both is a benefit. In addition, it could also be a good idea to 'cross check' the textbooks in case there is an error in one. For example, the tetrahedral bond angle is listed at 190.5° instead of 109.5° in the Edexcel Hill & Hunt book (pg. 119); something that should have easily been caught in a proof read before publication. Now for the negatives. Of note is the price - at £45, it is hardly a cheap textbook. You have to consider that this contains AS + A2 for pretty much every exam board and more, and an ideal comparison would be adding up the cost of both AS + A2 exam board textbooks. In addition, you might want to try and find a copy at a library and see if it suits you before purchase; your mileage may vary. It is a real shame that there are no previews on Amazon for the 'Advanced Science' series of textbooks.Secondly, the breadth of content can be a double edged sword as in 'Advanced Physics': you have to sometimes dig to find content relevant to your exam board and there can be gaps if you cross reference against your exam board specification. As a student, I feel it is a very bad idea to rely on only a couple of sources for your learning.Luckily, chemistry students have the crème de la crème of online resources in the form of 'chemguide.co.uk': if you have not heard of it before, it is an excellent resource and can be easily found via your internet search engine of choice.
