Batman Detective Comics 5: Gothtopia

Gothatopia interesting concept
Good read. Really enjoyed the Jim Gordon zero year story. The 3 part Gothtopia is an very interesting concept. Always been a fan of the Else World tales that have someone like Batman in a different setting or time period. Would of been cool if this was fleshed out more. Overall a solid story. The special Detective Comics backups for issue 27 were interesting. My favorite is the one where Bruce is 75.

Disappointing hodgepodge of a book
Disappointed. The previous 4 in this series were gripping. This book is a hodgepodge of unrelated stories, indeed as I got into the second half of this book I got the feeling the stories were fillers inserted to fill space between the covers. The Jim Gordon storyline is good, but the rest... nah! One of the stories is also covered in one of the Batman 52 books.

Good Art...Non-existent plot
Still with the "MEH" plot already! Except this time...the Utopia aspect was almost laughable. It's about time for a change and hopefully, the new team will create something that's new but still attracts attention. That's what these people are paid for and that's we "the readers" would like to see. It's missing an emotional connection that hooks the reader and doesn't let up throughout the transitions of the plot. The artwork is good but it would be nice to have a plot worth reading for a change.

The best Scarecrow story in years
Open caveat I am a massive scarecrow fan and this is a scarecrow story. It is also one of the most original scarecrow stories in decades and looks at a whole other side of his research and what he can do to a city. It also looks at Batman and what he wants in life and answers some pretty serious fan questions with regards to the old Catwoman/Talia debate. It is well written but not masterfully like Synder does, A- really. My only issue is the ending. I am not going to spoil anything but Batman has a moment where he could be happy, have someone in his life and there is no cost, no damage (because it has already been done) and yet he continues to be a broody misery guts. I know the reason, it wouldn't fit with other series and Detective Comics series doesn't have the ultimate say over what is going on with Batman but it was a bit of a let down. I don't want the return of campy very likely gay with teenage boys Batman but just some small point of levity would have been nice after the events of Death of the Family have continued to leave the Bat Family broken.Maybe I just want to write Batman comics.
