Piercing Heaven: Prayers of the Puritans (Prayers of the Church)

A little disappointed
I was disappointed that the editor of this book did not keep the original language of the Puritans but instead modernized the text. Unfortunately, this is the trend. The original language is not difficult to understand if you’re willing to slow down but we want everything handed to us on a silver platter and not have to work for it. You lose a lot when you modernize the text. A better option is The Valley of Vision.I still gave it four stars because the actual content of course is excellent but it is a shame the editor did not let the Puritans speak in their own words.

Drop in Quality
I hate to write a bad review because I love the contents of the book, but I am really disappointed in the apparent drop in quality. I first purchased this book in 2020 and thought it was a beautiful book (front and back has empresses gilding) and the materials were hight quality. I just purchased this book again now in 2022 to donate to a church library and now the quality of the gilding on the front has significantly diminished (it’s not as shiny, it’s smaller and not even centered), the book feels like thinner/cheaper material, and the worst part is the back. The beautiful gilding has been replaced with a back and white sticker that has scuff marks and isn’t even centered on the back of the book. Overall, very disappointed in the drop in quality.

Teach Me How to Pray
This has become a favorite of mine. Daily I use one of these prayers in the morning to springboard me into prayer. It has not only helped me to deepen my discipline in prayer but has also enlivened my zeal and passion to pursue communion with God in such a way.I would highly recommend this book to you! It is not hard to read. It is not overly dramatic. These are down-to-earth, contrite spirit, easily understood prayers. May God bless your time praying with these old saints!

Indispensable!
I love this book and the many deeply heartfelt prayers it contains. I bought two as gifts for friends and they agree with me - we shed tears reading the prayers and praying them ourselves. This book has truly deepened and improved my prayer life. I highly recommend it.

Prayer and Spirit engaging
In my opinion, the book couples well with my reading of the bible. I would always end my quite time reading the bible with prayer. If you are versed in scripture you will hear and sense the principle of scripture within the prayers themselves. It's like reading scripture with your specific issues on mind and the Spirit engaging your heart simultaneously. Call it inspiration or revelation It will speak to the serious person of prayer. I may sound subjective in my reply but that's what I think.

I love it!
This a wonderful book! Many of the prayers are straight from scripture. I prefer this book to The Valley of Vision. It's very pretty, too!

VoV+
There are some books that have been made available to us to help us in our weakness. Valley of Vision has been one. It is a book of meditations. This is a book of prayers that can be used for meditation. I also like that you know who said what which is something that valley a vision lacks. I will be using this in part of my daily devotion or quiet time for years to come.

Modern language jars, repetitive
This is a collections of prayers assembled from writings of people whom the compiler regards as Puritans - though one or two of them, like George Herbert, would have been unlikely to recognise themselves as such. The language is modernised, which I find jarring. There is no doubting the strength of Christian devotion of the original writers, but the prayers are repetitive and wordy, and many are rather too self-obsessed. The compiler has attempted to group the prayers by theme, but it was often not clear to me why a prayer had been allocated to a particular theme. There are better anthologies of Puritan devotion, like "The Valley of Vision" and the Banner of Truth's two volumes "Voices from the Past".
