Hilarious and fun movie
This is such an over melodramatic movie with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Both are naturally very gifted actors and fun to watch as truly odd and intriguing characters in this off-beat old school movie. We finally bought it so we can enjoy this zany movie for years to come.

Silliest Movie Ever
Okay, if you don't like really silly comedies you won't like this one. But if you like to be silly sometimes, this is the movie for you. A very young Tom Hanks is great as Joe, and Meg Ryan is great as his love interest. I warn you though, just about every scene is pretty silly. I love it!

A funny and charming adventure about escaping the tedium of everyday life by taking a risk..
...Meg Ryan plays three roles as our hero, Tom Hanks, is diagnosed with an incurable disease and volunteers to throw himself into a volcano in exchange for living for a few weeks in the grand style. In this parody of South Pacific, a very young Hanks journeys from his bleak factory-job existence to the west coast where he chooses his expensive designer clothes and luggage before sailing away on a private yacht piloted by a glamorous version of Meg Ryan. A typhoon sinks the boat, they survive by using Hank's luggage as a life boat and wash up on the volcanic island. They are greeted by the Waponi people who are descended from the lost tribe of Israel and worship the angry God of the Volcano. They love Orange crush-it is their national drink. Meg and Tom have meanwhile fallen in love, are married by the Waponi chief (played hilariously by Abe Vigoda). They are bathed, fluffed and dressed decide before jumping into the volcano-an act that will supposedly calm the angry god. They jump, are blown out to sea and once again survive aboard Tom's luggage. It is all ridiculous and heart warming -we have all dreamed of what we might indeed be willing to sacrifice to know the joys of wealth and love, even if only briefly.

One of the best, deepest movies ever made.
If you've read some of the other reviews you'll know right off that "Joe vs the Volcano" is not easy to classify. To some, like me, it has profound depths, and speaks of life as a human being on a level few (if any) movies can achieve. To others it has no quality at all and is a waste of time to see.I have to say, though, that I've never met or heard of anyone who 'gets' Joe (i.e. knows what it's about, sees the symbolic nature of the people and events, knows it is talking about the deep issues of life) and hates it. All those whom I've met who don't like it also don't get it. They think it's a comedy, a love story, a 'light-hearted' film; all the things it's not. 'Joe' is everything that Ingmar Bergman ever wanted to say, but failed to say because he didn't know how to.JVTV is about, to quote Joe, courage. The courage to face life, to face down the fear that prevents you from being the person you know in your heart you are. It's about facing life with what life requires to be happy and fulfilled. When Joe was young he had the courage he needed. He was a firefighter. He ran into fires to rescue children and save people from the most painful death. Then he lost his courage and got a job selling "rectal probes". He always felt sick, seeing doctor after doctor until one told him the bad news: he was dying.Joe accepted the diagnosis, and this set him free from his fear. The worst had happened, nothing more to be scared of. He's going to die soon. His last task is to live well for the short time that remains. He is offered a few days of unlimited wealth and freedom if he agrees to leap into a volcano afterwards in order to help a businessman clinch a contract with superstitious natives. Joe accepts.Through a series of mishaps, Joe discovers what life is and what it requires. One memorable scene is when he is cast adrift on a raft, and, almost dead from exposure, watches a glorious Moon rise over the ocean. He's says, "Thank you God, I've forgotten how BIG...." when he collapses. When, finally he is standing on the lip of the volcano, ready to leap, the woman he has fallen in love with says:"Joe, nobody knows anything. We'll take this leap and we'll see. We'll jump and we'll see. That's life."This is the message of the movie. Nobody knows the future. Nobody knows what will happen. There is always risk. The only thing we can do is have courage, and leap. Those who don't leap are forever on the sidelines, watching those who have chosen to live. In essence, the message of Joe is: To leap is to live.I haven't spoiled the movie. There are many many parts that contribute and support the message. At one point Joe says, "I've come a long way on a crooked road to find you." The "crooked road" is a lighting-bolt like symbol that occurs frequently in the film. Watching for it is fun. Why are there ducks everywhere? Why is Joe always losing his hat? Why is Meg Ryan playing 3 characters (hint Joe is always telling the new Meg Ryan character: "I think I've seen you before."). Why doesn't Joe sleep? Why is Patricia 'soul sick'?There are so many things happening on so many levels it's hard to keep up.This is a movie for people who want to participate in the art experience. That's the difference between art and entertainment. Art requires the audience to think, to see, to participate. Entertainment just need someone to watch and react: "laugh at this, laught at that."Joe vs the Volcano is for the elite of movie watchers. Sorry, but it's true.

Maybe the best supporting role portrayals EVER
This is a darling little movie, a bit of a fantasy, with a lot of satirical comment about the grind of the 'working world' -- and the quest for a true life-partner as a mate. Maybe the best supporting role portrayals EVER, and I don't say that lightly. People walk into a set and talk to 'Joe' [Hanks] for a few minutes, and are never seen again, but the audience is mesmerized. Examples: Ossie Davis, as a 'helpful' limo driver; Robert Stack as a serious, but manipulative physician; Lloyd Bridges as an eccentric gazillionaire, who sends 'Joe' on a quest, which apparently will culminate in 'Joe' sacrificing his life, for a good cause.. "live like a man, die like a hero...that's what I say!". But, Dan Hedaya as 'Frank Waturi' -- the Boss from hell-- takes the cake. His grubby five o-clock shadow, the dandruff on the shoulder of his suit, and his continual sneering telephone conversation, "I am not arguing that with you - I know he can get the job, but can he DO the job?" is classic! To all this are perfectly-delivered lines from Tom Hanks in reaction, with a snappy cadence. And, of course, Meg Ryan playing 3 roles, all different, of course. To show you the power of this film, we had a couple as friends, going through a crisis - HER boss was like Frank Waturi. We showed them the film, and she quit her job within a week. They started a family. True story. So, enjoy!

Joe versus the Volcano
Simply put the best feel good film of all time. My favorite film. Better than the Entire Lord of the rings, and I believe even Casablanca. Like all films some people will hate it, others like it, and still others adore it. I am one of these last set of others.Joe is plucked from a meanlingless life, into an adventure whose final chapter must mean the end of his life. He has one month to live like he has never lived. And he does.Who else would ever have the excuse and need to purchase luggage like that!I believe this film is really for a select group of people who want to live the key line "My father says almost the whole world's asleep. Everybody you know, everybody you see, everybody you talk to. He says only a few people are awake. And they live in a state of constant, total amazement."Its for people who don't need any sort of drug to feel high. For people who just need an occasional reminder on what life's priorities really are.
