Sound Sleep, Sound Mind: 7 Keys to Sleeping through the Night

severe sleep problem unsolved
I have not yet finished the book and I do agree with much of what I read in the first 9 or so chapters. However, I have fibromyalgia and have had 2 sleep studies done that show I do not get deep sleep and have alpha intrusions into my delta sleep, but no sleep doctor knows what to do about it. I do meditate and deal with my feelings and use a lot of imagery, but without my meds I would get no sleep whatsoever. It has been proven that fibromyalgia is a problem in the central nervous system where the sympathetic nervous system is overactive and the parasympathetic is in under drive and no amount of dealing with feelings will completely change this. I have responded well to meditation , hypnotherapy, and guided imagery, but still need my meds to sleep or I actually would get no more than about 2 hours no matter how often I got out of bed. Believe me after 20 years of trying to solve this, I know my own body. Till they figure out the mystery of fibromyalgia, I will continue to need my meds, but the ideas in the book along with my meds are giving me a better quality of sleep. Unfortunately, most sleep clinics offer little help if you don't have sleep apnea.Sue in Ohio

Repetitive and wordy
Good concepts, but took way too long to get to the point of what are the 7 keys to successful sleep. Sleep for Dummies would be better, especially if you are at the point of needing to read self help books on sleep.

Highly Recommend
Sound Sleep Sound Mind is the best book I have read on this topic, and I have read many. Having suffered with insomnia for years, this book has helped me discover that your ability to sleep never leaves you, but more accurately can be interrupted by various factors continuously and on a regular basis if left unresolved. The good news is it will all come back once you remove the interrupting factors. This book will help you discover what those factors are relevant to your own situation and, most importantly, it will give you time tested and proven methods to address them. Dr Krakow uses sound science and has developed insights and perspectives regarding the sleep experience that are truly remarkable. His insights and observations are so accurate that they could have only been obtained through his own experiences in dealing with and finding resolution to his own sleep quality problems. The recommendations and suggestions presented in this book truly work and are well worth the time and money invested. Thank you Dr Krakow for sharing your knowledge and experience with others, I for one am very grateful for your contributions in this area.

Beware before you buy
Please beware before you read. Insomnia is a result of anxiety (fear), expectation, and sleep hygiene. The first half of the book talks about all of the horrible things insomnia can do to you. It even mentions death (which isn't true). How in the world do you expect people to sleep when they think they'll die if they don't? I don't understand the logic behind this, and it is very likely it will make insomnia worse as a result. Even if you manage to power through that half, the second half is way to intricate and convoluted to be helpful. The method and details he shares for the mindset changes just aren't practical. It's like you're given a glimpse into some weird internal tool the author finds helpful, but is just flat out confusing and subjective. If you're really interested in overcoming insomnia and ready to do the work, you can't go wrong with The Effortless Sleep Method: The Incredible New Cure for Insomnia and Chronic Sleep Problems . I also recommend her other books. It will absolutely resolve your insomnia if you do the things outlined in the book. It's not easy, but it works.

Best book on sleep problems out there!
If you have problems sleeping you've gotta get this book. It is by far the best one. It contains everything you need to know to understand the importance of sleep and to decide for yourself what to do next, to rectify your own sleep issues. Often we don't know what to do or whom to talk to about our sleep problems. In this book the author outlines how to uncover your special sleep related issues and the type of doctor to see that can help you best. There are tons of resources in this book too--support groups and sleeping aids.I have used a couple of the sleep devices I found on here and they really helped. Read this book! This is my go to book on sleep problems.

Best Book on Sleep!
If you are looking for help to understand your sleep problems or sleep disorder, this is the book for you. Dr. Krakow has done an amazing job of giving us all the information we need to understand what is causing the problem and how to begin the process of "fixing" it. Most books out there overgeneralize and don't really get into anything specific. Dr. Krakow's book is not like that. He has done an outstanding job, and done it with empathy you can feel as you read. If you get this book, you will definitely be on the way to getting the help you need. There's lots more help on his website, as well: [...]

Ruined by the writing style
This book contains a lot of what would be helpful information if only it were better written. I'm no writing expert myself, so I don't even quite know how to describe what's wrong. I normally find reading to be pleasurable but this was a painful experience. It's not just that this book is boring and redundant, with stilted and cumbersome language. More than that, the writing style is often downright *bizarre* and I've never encountered anything like it. It's a shame because the author seems to be a wonderful, compassionate doctor who has helped many people with their sleep problems and I wish him continued success. I expect he is very helpful in person, but I'm afraid I received little to no benefit from this book. "Sound Sleep, Sound Mind" does contain some valuable information which I have not seen in other books on this subject, but because I had to *force* myself to read to the end, I will be passing this book on to someone who might get more out of it than I did.

Best book I have read on sleep
I know if you are reading this you have probably read the typical sleep guidelines a million times. They are fairly trivial to the seasoned insomniac. This book however really does offer up some new ideas and techniques to the issue of sleep problems. Its also written with a very kind and sympathetic tone. I wont go into detail on the contents because its actually quite long - but I was surprised and can say that Dr Krakow really has put some thought into it. A lot of it is his own theories but I have found them to match my experience. This is one of those books that Ive actually bought for someone else having read it and really got something out of it - and considering Im a tight bastard - thats really saying something.

Right on!
As a Hypnotherapist specializing in emotional healing, this book really "clicked" with me. Krakow's two-pronged approach to addressing both the physiological and the emotional contributors to sleep problems is not only practical but offers HOPE for anyone suffering from compromised sleep. The book explains how sleeplessness doesn't begin at night. It is rooted in patterns developed early in life that place a reliance on thinking and avoiding feelings. The result is the signature mental "wheel spinning" that keeps a person exhausted and awake night after night. The book provides strategies a person can use to stop self-sabotaging behaviors and learn how to tune into and trust the wave of sleepiness that carries us over into natural sleep. I highly recommend it to any healing practitioner who works with emotion-based issues and anyone suffering with disrupted sleep that is willing to do the work necessary to put insomnia to bed!

One of the best books on the topic, or maybe THE best book.
In the book Sound Sleep - Sound Mind, the author Barry Krakow, a real authority on sleep therapy, gives many valuable advice on how to fall asleep and stay asleep during the night, based on newest research. This is a profound book, that goes far beyond the advice of other books.Within a few chapters of the book, it already improved my falling asleep a great deal. Before, I was tossing and turning in bed for up to 2 hours. Now I fall asleep naturally within 15 minutes. The book is highly recommended for all troubled sleepers!
