Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta

Incredible!!!
I would like to say that the 1st In David's line of reference books. That arrive was advertised as the 3rd in the series. I believe this may be the 1st. I believe it may go " Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta", " Frazetta The Greatest Comic Book Cover Artist" (Think fine paintings) & " The Cover Art of Frazetta". I'll have to talk to David to make sure, as the dates are a bit obscure/deceiving as they saw reprints because they are so good. As a product read the dimensions & then think bigger! Big beautiful giant double page pictures, so why no photo's #1: I don't like spoilers & this is a very visual book. enjoyable by those that cannot read in fact. #2; I want you to experience the same thrill I did opening this book! While these books are numbered as a reference book series each book can stand alone. But if you purchase any one in any order, chances are you are going to want to own all three. A delight in any Library. A must have for avid Frazetta fans. J. David Spurlock has the unique privilege of Knowing Frank Frazetta on a personal level...for many years. In truth David may be more knowledgeable about Frank's work than Frank's own children. This book is loaded with beautiful artwork, leaving just enough page space for incredible knowledge about the pieces, there are dazzling close ups where you can see how franks brush rode over the surface of the canvass. So close in fact that what appears as a straight line at a normal view is wavy with tiny specks of paint around. imperceivable while standing in front of the painting. there are dimensions given that blow the mind as to Frazetta's manual dexterity. What appears to have been painted on a large canvass may have been painted on a 7 x 10 piece of tile. I have been starring & following Frank Frazetta for 50 years. unknowingly my whole live as frazetta's work is saturated through Pop Culture. His work can be seen on the album covers of bands such as Nazareth & Molly Hatchet, Movie Posters, Comic Books, Magazine covers, Book covers Galore! Comic Panels. Heavily copied on Vans & Cars in the 70's & 80's. Frank Frazetta is truly a modern-day master & dare I say the most influential artist of the century...Hardley a dare, more a fact! The dare would be to try & purchase just one of Davids books about Frazetta, but I would never make that dare, as I would never want to discourage anyone from the pleasure, they will receive enjoying Frazetta's art & David's informative writing. David has a more than qualified to write about Frank's works of art just based on his relationship with Frank & his family. But David is also a very accomplished artist in his own right, and an Art Teacher. The facts in this book need no vetting as the only one more qualified to write about Frazetta's Art is Frazetta himself. And since he has passed away that is no longer an option. Purchase with confidence. I cannot imagine any Frazetta fan being disappointed. As I stated I am a long /lifetime fan of Frazetta & with every book I purchased written by J. David Spurlock I learn something new & exciting. Exciting...yes indeed like the fact Frazetta taught himself to paint with his left hand after his stroke, and the art is possibly better than when he would use his natural right hand. How could it be better? by this book & judge for yourself!

Great Hi-Res Frazetta
Saw some reviews complaining about sloppy editing and typos - I think this maybe was an issue of earlier printings. I got the 4th printing (Jan 2024) and didn't notice any egregious issues (found 1 typo, but I'm not buying this for the prose, ya know?)The most important question is: how does the art look? It looks rad as hell. Super high quality photos of some classic paintings (and a couple bonus pen and ink drawings). I love that for a handful of these paintings they include the originals and the revisions so you can see how Frazetta kept fiddling with them over the years. You can really see the texture and brush strokes Frazetta laid down clearly.Just so you know going in, this is not an exhaustive collection. This is just a fraction of Frazetta's considerable body of work. Was a little bummed that my personal favorite, Night Stalker, is not featured. But oh well. Great book anyway.

Great Frazetta book
I was really impressed with this book. I used to have the original Peacock/Bantam books and I ended up selling them when the three Fenner / Underwood Books came out. I still have those but this one is a nice addition to my Frazetta book collection. The book features some pen & ink work but the bulk is Frank’s paintings. I noticed some pieces I was not familiar with but also the addition of sketches and preliminary drawings showing his thought process for many of the paintings. The book even shows how Frank continued to revise some paintings even after publication. That was fascinating and in some cases we see the different versions. The book is BIG which is nice. The paper stock is amazing (smooth, not too thick and easy to turn) and the design throughout is fantastic. (I have the 4th edition).I love the detail shown of many of the paintings which is like perusing Frank’s originals closer with the naked eye. The reproductions are solid and very colorful. This is a great introduction to new Frazetta fans and a solid entry for existing fans. Highly recommended!
