Refurbished model to replace old one
This an old model (2006, I think), but I have had one for years which broke. In spite of the clunkiness due to it's age, it's very good, so I bought this refurbished model.

I had an eTrex Legend HCx for years and LOVED it! Once accidentally dropped it in a stream while filtering some water and was off the mountain before I realized I didn't have it. Hiked back in a week later, found it in about a foot of water, dried it out, and continued using it for another several years! It finally died after water got inside during a slot-canyon adventure. I think I cracked the housing before entering some water and was not able to resuscitate it. Now about THIS product. It lives up to it's name and has been with my on every adventure since I got it. Even more rugged than it's predecessor, I expect it will last every bit as long. I love that it's still compact, light weight, and has the best battery life of any comparable product on the market. It has the latest receiver technology so it can see all of the satellites, positioning has been excellent even in deep canyons and heavy tree cover. I'm so happy that they stayed with AA-sized batteries so you never have to worry about finding a charger in the back country. I've owned several similar devices from other manufacturers and this one is by far my favorite. If you want a simple, rugged, reliable way to keep track of where you've been, where you are, and where you're headed, I highly recommend you consider the Garmin eTrex 20x.

Good entry level color GPS. It takes a little to get used to and compared to features and a GUI of an iPhone it seems dated but works well for the task at hand. The screen is clear, it's loaded with features, perfect handheld size, and appears to be durable. The controls are a little slow so don't expect to pan around the map quickly. I purchased this for kayaking, hiking, and backpacking. Most importantly, I purchased it to make waypoints when backpacking in an area with no cell phone service and it works great for that. I opted to download the TOPO map and it works great! I plan on downloading the marine map add-on as well. If I could give any advice with this GPS it would be to read the manual and play with it before you use it on the trail/water. I printed a copy of the manual to make reference easier. A second tip is to be sure to register your Garmin GPS and download the Garmin Express software so you can connect it to your computer. Once you register it you will receive a 10% discount code that you can use for downloads from the Garmin website. If you plan on downloading additional maps and software pickup a quality micro SD card. All in all this GPS was exactly what I was looking for and well worth the money if you don't need something super sophisticated with a large screen. NOTE: Picture shown is with optional TOPO map addition.
